Wonder what's peoples thoughts about the following options, for use on a 5d with 24-105 IS L lens, ot 17-35mm f2.8 sigma...

New Speedlite 430EX

Used Speedlite 550EX


Can probably get either for around £150.

I've no use for off camera flash, so no need to control/fire a slave unit. I've previously used the ibuilt flash on my old 30d, and whilst not ideal has got me through most situations.

So, is the extra power and control of a used 550 worth the risk of buying used, against the security of buying a lesser 430EX ??

I thought about Metz too, but not sure what auto features i'd lose with it not being Canon to Canon ??
 
I use a 580 EXII on my 5D, they are now down to about £230 ish!
 
As jimybell says, go for a new 580 EXII from Kerso for about £230/£240ish, then claim £40 cashback from canon, bringing it to about £200 :)
 
I've got to go with everyone else here (actually I did lol) the 580Ex from Kerso was £225 a couple of months back so all in I paid £185 after the canon cashback, well worth the money IMHO.

Current budget is £150, hence the mention of a used 550EX - i'd love to be able to justify £200 for a flash gun, but i just can't, one on principal and two on finances !!
 
if it was me, i would go for the 430 out of the two. a few months ago there were a few threads about which flashgun, and most said the 430 was ample for most things.
 
Its a pity you cant stretch that extra £35 for the 580. I was in the same position as yourself and had the same concerns about spending that much on a flash, in the end it came down to about a 40 quid difference so I went for it, I convinced myself that it was worth it as the 580exII used to go for over £350 :eek:

Having said all that I think you will be perfectly happy with the 430 :)

Thanks for the heads up - they only have one currently and thats up to £210 + £6p&p

Kerso quoted me £229 for a new one, which with £40 cashback would be £189

People get carried away on ebay !
