Canon SLR vs Fujifilm Compact Dilemma

Afternoon all,

About a year ago I bought myself a Canon 550D, and later a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens, and have acquired some filters and whatnot etc between then and now.
I've used the camera a fair amount, got some nice shots in Malta when we went last summer. However, what with being a student, I rarely get the time to 'properly' go out to places with all the gear and get good shots. Even when I'm up in London or wherever, it's often a pain to have to lug around a weighty slr, not to mention all the other bits and bobs! I just don't feel I'm getting the best out of the camera.

As such, I've been contemplating selling the SLR bits that I've got, and replacing them with a nice high end compact. I've been looking at something like the Fujifilm x100 (partly because it has looks to die for!). This is far more portable and so I can have it with me with much less bother, and is far more discreet about town- but still has top notch image quality (or at least good enough for someone of my experience). It should let me keep learning and taking photos, whilst better suiting my lifestyle.

So, after that ramble...any thoughts?

Cheers folks,

Yup. I'd say do it.

I have a 5D and some nice lenses but mostly use a MFT G1 and manual lenses because it's much more compact and lighter... and because it attracts much less attention than a big fat SLR and lens combo but still gives good quality at low to medium ISO's.

Will you be keeping the DSLR set up? I'm keeping mine.

The Canon would have to go to pay for the Fujifilm

That's a shame as there's nothing wrong with having more than one camera. Some of us have quite a few more than one!

Steve.

Yes, but you're just greedy! :D

In reply to OP you might want to wait until the X100S settles it's price down or you may get upgrade lust in quick succession. Just a thought.

If it means you'll carry the camera with you and use it more often then go for it.. I changed from a 500D set up recently but went for the x-pro 1, I don't regret it at all.

My brother has a nice Nikon 300s + fast lenses set up yet his fuji is always in his pocket, he uses it a hell of a lot.

Can't help with the fuji, but another possible option - what about the 40mm pancake lens - it's very light and compact ? Would enable you to keep everything you've got for when you do manage to get out ...
