Canon Sigma Lens Error

No
I just picked up a used Sigma 100-300mm lens for my Canon 40D. Unfortunately the seller (not on Talk Photography) sent it in some bubblewrap in a bubble envelope, no box or additional hard outer packing. I have attached the lens and it will occassionally take pictures but will then give an error message saying there is a communication error between the lens and body and I should clean the contacts. I have removed the lens and cleaned the contacts but have the same issue repeatedly. I have contacted the seller and am awaiting a response but wondered if anyone here had received a similar error and found a cure or whether the lens is shot.

I have had this issue myself with a couple of lens. It happened to me when shooting on a cold day. On one occasion after trying to clean lens contacts and the bodies, which did not fix the fault, I just ended up going home.

I think in my case it was caused by the camera being in a warm car and then in cold air outside. So probably moisture caused by the change in temperature.

No help with the problem but if I had received that lens that poorly packaged I would have sent it straight back. I bought the same lens off of here and it was very well packaged in it's original case and box.

Thanks Jonathan, didn't notice any moisture and my other lens was fine.

Scott I nearly did send it straight back but thought I'd give it a chance!!

Was the lens advertised as being fully digital compatible? A lot of older sigma lenses will not talk to EOS bodies and I suspect you have bought one. Put it on AV mode and set it to max apeture (f4.5?), take a few pics at different focal lengths. Once done, set the apeture at f10 and take a pic, if the error code comes up then you have an incompatible lens.

:agree:
I have a older non digital Sigma that will not be reconised on 40D, 400D - gives error messages. However on 50D & 7D works fine. Thats what I have tried it on.

I also had a similar issue, alas only once when coming out of a aircon room into 30c it gave error message and would not work. Had to reboot the camera and let the lens warm up. Then it was fine. Was told later by a service agent that temperature change like that has that effect.

Thanks for the info guys. looks like the transportation might not be the issue then.

I've checked with Sigma and it does indeed appear to be an incompatible lens. It was sold to me as being suitable for a Canon DSLR so I am seeking a refund from the seller.

Assuming it is an ebay seller, be polite all the way as being rude will not help your case if you need to open a case.

Let us know how you get on.

Good news the seller has agreed to a refund so I will shortly be on the lookout for a new zoom. Thinking about the Canon 70-300mm IS USM but am not sure yet whether the difference is enough to justify the price increase over the Canon 55-250mm IS.

Good news indeed. If its a business seller make sure that you get *all* postage refunded too. The 70-300mm IS is a good lens but I'd go for the 55-250 as it's an excellent lens. Put the excess aside and add a little more every once in a while and you'll soon find yourself in a position to but a 70-200mm L.
