Hi all.

I am thinking of getting my Canon 6d serviced. Never had a camera serviced before so I am unsure whom to use and to what the general cost might be. I searched the net and found a couple of pdf's from the Canon repair center suggesting a £90 service charge although I have no idea how old those were.

If anyone as any experience for service centers and costs it would be most welcomed.

Thanks
Gaz

I had to send my Canon 70d back for a repair just before the 2 year warranty ran out. Not the same, I know, but I have to say the service was excellent. They sent me an e-mail to let me know when it arrived at Elstree, when it went into the workshop and let me know when they were finished the job. It came back by next day delivery a week later, with a list of everything they had checked, serviced and fixed. It looked like a brand new camera.

The Canon service centres are considered excellent, and reasonable vfm.

That said... it’s a camera, servicing is of limited use, it’s not like there’s thousands of moving parts that can be adjusted, lubricants changed etc.

If there’s a problem, send it to be repaired, if there isn’t, what do you think servicing will achieve?

Hi Phil.

You give some sound solid advice. I can't really believe I'm considering having it serviced tbh. I'm not one to do such things along with warranty's and extra insurance for stuff.
The camera as a few things that are not really covered by a service which are cosmetic I guess but they may do whilst there. Eg: The textured rubber along the side is lifting. The main dial plate as fell off (still have it).
Other issues are.

Quite a bit of debris in the viewfinder "which I no longer see" as I'm used to it and they don't show up on images.

On long exposures (dark scenes) there are many dead pixels.

Also of late and I don't know if i'm imagining it but the focusing seems as though it needs more light than it used too.
That maybe a user problem though.

You know how you just get a feeling that somethings not quite as it should be. So I thought a bit of tlc might be in order.
I love the camera, did so from the moment I first picked it up.
On the other hand I wouldn't want to spend a fortune on it as it's a good few years old now.

I have to second the opinion above - I have used Elstree on a number of occasions and they are excellent. They even did some extra work without charge and without being asked for a reduction! After my experience of them I wouldn’t contemplate using anyone else.

Thanks Sue.

If I do decide to have the camera serviced/looked at I will send it there.

A camera service is nothing more than a clean.

General consensus here seems to be leave alone until there is a definite problem that's ruining images. I am ok with the wear and tear issues as I like to use my camera and not have it wrapped in cotton wool.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Not quite true, there are some lubricants around the mirror & shutter mechanism.

Remember the Nikon D600 issue?

Okay, a check and clean. Of course there are lubricants involved but they don't need an 'oil change' so to speak. If everything's functioning properly, it will not be touched.

And quite right too. Mention of the D600 oily shutter issue makes the point - you don't want a single extra molecule of that stuff flying around inside the mirror box.
