Hi
I'd like to have my 1DX repaired (broken tripod mount screw thread)
Does anyone have any recommendations on places that might be able to fix this?
I'll be ringing Canon and Fixation even though their online forms state they no longer service the 1DX, as I believe the part is the same on the mark II and III.
Thanks

Fixation won't touch it...
Reason being, if anything gets damaged in the process, no parts are available!!
I expect Canon will say the same thing so might just have to get used to it!
Humbug!

Try a.j .johnstone in Glasgow .they are independent but quite well stocked

The only bit of that video I agree with is the don't buy cheap tools!

Skimmed it a bit but my first thought was a helicoil to redo the thread and then some kind of adaptor if needed. Other than that then I'd think buying a broken one off eBay that's got an intact bottom plate I'd probably the next best idea as it means you have a parts camera already.

Without knowing what the problem is, it's hard to recommend a solution. A "broken tripod screw thread" could be any number of things, from a slightly cross threaded insert to the bottom of the body being ripped off.

The correct name for the part I believe is a Tripod socket. It's been de-threaded when removing the L Plate from the camera.
Happened to my 5D4 about 4 years ago, canon fixed that one for me for £101.
I think I'll keep it as it is. It's been the best camera I've ever owned up to now (a brand new R5 II arrived today!!), every lens I've attached to it has been tack sharp and perfect with it, so I'll keep it until it dies!!!

Would a rivet nut fit? It will depend on what is under the plate. They would need a tool to put them in.

 Not sure I would clamp my 1DX in a vice

They got something to me (eventually) as I needed to replace my R5 View finder eye cap (the rubber bit) - Canon begrudgingly gave me their details (as Canon wanted me to send the full camera back for a service on a £15 rubber viewfinder cover...)!

AJ Johnstone were quite difficult to deal with. They told me once I had paid i'd have the part within the week. When the invoice came through it included a £10 "handling charge" on a £15 part.... anyway I paid as I needed something....

Then it didn't come within a week, actually I got no receipt of payment confirmation (From memory), any email chasers were not responded too. After a month I found a phone number on google (not listed on any of their emails) and the chap that answered the phone couldn't confirm receipt of my order and could only say "we are expecting a shipment from canon and once we have it we will dispatch your part" - He didn't even know which part I was after......

Eventually it came about 2 months after I'd ordered it.

Wasn't exactly brilliant.
