This weekend I shall be photographing my grandchildren at an indoor gymnastics competition using my new canon R5. There will only be one person on the floor at any time so I am hoping that face tracking with eye detection will be all I need. As a second option I would like to set up the * button to switch to a different focussing mode. I know this is possible but could someone tell me how please. Alternatively are there any better solutions. I use BBF with the shutter button just controlling metering and shutter release.

Thanks in advance.

I use the AF on button for continuous, and the * for eye tracking (there’s a video link somewhere for setting this up)

I have AF on set up for primary focusing mode, whatever that may be then Region/spot on the button the right and eye tracking on the button nearest the thumb

Its easy to set up - go into the custom menu - I haven;t got my camera with me at the moment - I think its one of the yellow menus, closer to the right than left). There is a button re-assignment section click it, cycle through your buttons and then once you find the button you want you can click into the menu and set it as desired.

To be honest - there are so many options and it took me a good few "versions" to get to my "ideal" set up so the best piece of advice I can give is to have a play.

what's happened to your olympus gear gordon ?

Still using and loving the olympus kit. I just need the higher res and better low light capability of the R5 for photographing my granddaughters gymnastics competition. I am often shooting at 12800 ISO and in a position where I am not filling the frame.
Funnily enough I have just (today) got the canon 100-500mm zoom and 1.4 extender on a 48hr loan (free) I sat in my garden to play at photographing the birds and used both the canon and olympus kit and preferred the Olympus. The quality, for my use was on par but the user experience of the OM1 was superior. The OM kit is going nowhere!
