I've currently got the R5 and R6, I've decided to sell the R6 and upgrade to the R3.

The R6 is currently my go to body for sports but I've always wanted a flagship body, I know the R3 technically isn't a flagship but it's near enough. Most reviews I've read and watched suggest it's as good as, if not better, than the 1DX Mark III. As I'm fully invested in RF glass the 1DX just isn't an option.

I was wondering if anyone has got the R3 yet and what you think of it, how's the eye focus working?

I'll probably also be buying the RF 85mm f/1.2L at the same time, I just love the RF 50mm 1.2 and I used the 85mm on a test drive from Canon and it's an amazing piece of glass.

I’m not sure I’d like to test the R3 before deciding. For events I’m usually with two bodies and I’ve had a lot of success with two R5s this year. It’s the first time I’ve had matching camera bodies and that has been a benefit.

Panamoz have it in stock at the moment, got my finger hovering over the order button
I know hence I said buy it while you can ;)
you may not see any more for a while...

though looks to be pretty expensive for a grey import.

Panamoz are actually cheaper than E infin and you never see that!

I generally avoid grey importing and I would never look at e-infin regardless of the price, I have heard enough stories to be put off by them.
Certainly wouldn't trust them with a £6K camera!!

I've only ever heard good things about E-Infinity,
I bought my R5 from them, after 3 months it died, emailed them and they got straight back to me, asked me if I could deal direct with Canon UK, pay for the repairs and they would refund me.
It was with Canon Uk for 3 days, new PCB board was needed, £582.
I paid Canon, sent the invoice to E-Infinity and within 10 minutes I had the money in my PayPal account.
Can't say fairer than that.
My biggest order with them (when I first moved to RF) was nearly 8K.

and the cherry on the cake, Canon UK gave me a 6 month UK warranty after the repair :)

That's what is just holding me back, only 7% lower than UK price, I suspect that's just market conditions.
They know people can't get hold of them and have priced accordingly.
There is a little voice in my head that bugs me as I'm considering ordering, maybe I'll air on the side of sensibility for once and hold off until availability is better late next year and the prices drop, we'll see. :)

Lad I know got his pair of R3s last week - his first game was in driving rain and they held up well after getting wet - Twitter link

I also photographed a golf tournament a couple of months ago with one of the guys who spent months testing for Canon - he told me it's basically a 1dx iii with the added advantages and drawbacks of mirrorless.

I'm with you on the 85 1.2. There is quite literally nothing that compares.

That said, I'm all about film photography now.

This is the same trend of new camera gears, the same for both R5 and R6 when they first came out. Just let the storm die down and the price will be adjusted accordingly, but YMMV.

Good to know it holds up in the rain, every review I've watched or read has basically said the same thing, that it' pretty much a 1DX III with the pros and cons of mirrorless as you said.
I remember when I had the 5D Mark IV I always wanted the 1DX but never got one, so I think the flagship for me is the R3.
If I'm completely honest, I don't need it, the R5 and R6 are fantastic, the R6 is great for sports and when you don't need 45MP but I think selling the R6 for the R3 is on the cards. :)

yes I remember your case because a friend of mine had the same issue with R5. Though LCE got it fixed for him.

Another friend of mine bought a lens from them which stopped auto focusing properly within 6 months. They just had him going in circles and didn't support him at all. They eventually stopped replying to his emails.

May be they have changed now or rather improved their customer support because your experience is certainly more recent.

I got the A1 cheaper than the R3 price (and A1 is supposed to be slightly more expensive).
I agree with you, I think they are playing the supply-demand game here. At least its not as bad as consoles with people selling them at £200 more than RRP!!

Don't forget cRAW which is half the file size :)

Yep, I use CRAW on the R5.
What I meant was, as an example for running photography where you take thousands of images, you'll never need the 45MP for cropping etc so the R6 is perfect.
I take all my running photos in large or medium JPEG, otherwise I'd spend half my life sitting waiting for file copies, Lightroom imports etc. :ROFLMAO:

I hear you and I agree that 20fps images is just too much to delete on post :ROFLMAO:

Yep, I went to a bird of prey centre recently, I was using electronic shutter on the R5 with high frame rate (30 FPS), ended up with over 5000 images :ROFLMAO:
But on the plus side, I could literally choose the exact wing position I wanted and delete the rest.

No issue with rolling shutter?

No none at all. I find I get that when I'm approaching the MFD of the lens.
So using the 100-500 on birds in flight I didn't see any issues.
good to know thanks. I'm surprised that focal length makes a difference, I'll have to experiment.

Trigger happy bunny I see :p

There was a review of the R3 in last week's Amateur Photographer magazine (which I bought on the strength of it) and the tester rated it and thought the eye controlled focus was very good and worked seamlessly with the other settings he used (this was a Beta version of the camera too).

I'm glad Canon have brought ECF back, I think it's a great feature - I have it on my EOS 30v and EOS-3 35mm film cameras and really miss it when I pick up my 6D DSLR again after using them. Hopefully this feature will trickle down to some more affordable R series cameras over the next couple of years, in which case I might be tempted to jump ship to mirrorless then... unless of course there is a 5DV and that has ECF. :)

Right I've just ordered the R3 from Panamoz, I figure once their stock is gone it'll be hard to get one from anywhere based on Canon's press release about supply.
I've also ordered the RF 85mm f/1.2L, ordered that from E-Infinity as it was a lower price.

Let's see if they get here before Christmas.

I can see the R5 and R6 in my cabinet wondering which one is going to be sold, sorry R6 :ROFLMAO:

now you'll have 8k images per workshop to play with :p :ROFLMAO:
