Have Canon gone nuts with their pricing in the UK? I have just seen that the new EL1 flash is coming in at approx £1299!! Given that the prices for the new RF lenses are substantially more expensive will sales of these items suffer. If you compare the prices for the EF and R Lenses such as 100-400 v 100-500 and the 2.8 I Macros the prices have gone through the roof. I have Canon EX and Yongnuo an the Yongnuo has been every bit as good. Current Price for an EX600II is £619 (wex) or £435(Panamoz) Yongnuo EX600RT II (£130) Amazon

If you want the best……. Plus there is a problem sourcing components and the cost of everything has gone up. (Apart from wages)

I think there are a number of factors and you/we need to remember that the new mirrorless lenses are pretty much brand new designs whereas some of the DSLR lenses are years old designs and have earned their design and development money years ago. Plus, some of these modern lenses are really good and in some cases much better than their DSLR equivalents and in these instances buyers are stepping up in class and can expect to pay more for these newer and in some cases better lenses.

I'm headed in the opposite direction ...

Buy what you can sensibly afford - very few if any of us need it. And a sharper picture isn't going to buy you a seat on the boat to heaven ...

I'm happy with my dim, fuzzy old lenses. When did I last do an equipment upgrade - was it about 1953, back when Butlins still had redcoats?

But I've been to the moon & back three times since then in my Morris Minor ...

Some Canon related news here:

I wonder where this trend will put Canon in 5 years time. If market share continues to decline, will they drop the price to keep competitive, or push it up to maintain profits?

This made me remember a manufacturer I did some work for, every time they lost a customer they put the prices up to maintain the income and of course that would lead to losing other customers and the whole thing spiralled until they were bought out by someone with a different plan but I can't see that fate awaiting Canon in the near future as they're No.1 or No.2 depending on what you measure so it'll be business as usual for some time I think and business as usual at the moment seems often to be towards the more expensive side of the overall shrinking market that camera gear seems to be.

I don't know much about Canon or Nikons range but Sony do have some relatively small and light f1.8 primes and there are I think more third party options for Sony than for the other marques because of the open Sony mount. For anyone looking at mirrorless it may be an idea to look at all the options before buying, unless they're heavily invested in DSLR lenses and are happy to use them via an adapter.

There is a worldwide shortage of semi conductors at present. Anything with a chip in is hard to get and that’s reflected in the price at the mo

It's only certain chips but no idea if it applies to any Canon use.
You can buy an Xbox Series S almost anywhere but the Series X is still as rare as hens teeth.

I think thats due to a surplus in stock of the S. Same goes for the PS4 which is in stock and the second hand prices have even increased. The PS5 is still a unicorn.

Also, Manufacturers of semiconductors are choosing who they supply to. Would you rather sell to a company that pays in 30 days or a giant corporation like Microsoft, Sony or Canon who pay in 120 or even more.

If I was buying mirrorless I'd look at Sony or Fuji MF - for landscaping. But if I shot wild life Canon's R would be in a look in for the eye AF.

Don't like the R prices. Buy the EF adapter and stick any EF lens on the camera and job done. A lot were designed for the slighter higher resolution 5ds like so an R5 will be totally fine with any L EF lens from c. 2014 onward. You'll be able to mount any 3rd party EF fit lens on too.

The bodies are hilariously expensive but if you need eye AF it's probably the one.

Yep that’s what I’m planning to do get the adapter as well , apart from macro my main lens is an EF 300 2.8 and 1.4 and 2.0 TCs the eye focus looks perfect for moving animals

As well as that try buying a new car at the moment. Even if you can get an order expect a long delay and options restricted due to a shortage of semi conductors

I find new canon prices impossible to reconcile with my wallet. Their loss as I can just as easily go to Sony.
Oddly their market share reports look strangely favourable. Perhaps this the market where price is almost irrelevant

Wow thats a lot for a flash even if it's Guide Number: 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. maybe they were upset at profoto making them look cheap. I wonder what flashes the press boys will use on their sony's. I have Godox on mine which are ok unless you wish to use full power when they over heat quick as a flash :) :)

Don't buy a used car either as they are currently selling at +20% or so. At least here in Scotland.

Regards...

wow, even with Guide Number: 197' at ISO 100 and 200m, and the rechargeable LP-EL battery is a very good idea that will put the price up. I was hoping that canon would use the LP-E6/N/NH. As most canon users have a pocket full of these batteries including third parties.
Down side to LP-El batteries over AA is that AA can be purchased almost any where on the planet !

However £1,200 for s Speedlite is scary and I through the RT 600 at £599 was steep !
Agreed there is a lot of R&D for mirrorless eco system in a shrinking camera market, and perhaps Canon market strategy is not with the masses but with select Pro's who earn the income for such a product.

I was looking at the 300mm f/2.8 II as I've heard the Eye AF performance isn't so good with the older MKI version. Would be interested to hear your findings if you do go down the mirrorless route. Do you have the MKI or MK II?

I am glad i moved away from Canon, there is no way i can afford 4 x EL1 flash in my system. That's how many i need. I had 4 x RT600 before and that price was hard to stomach already.

I’ve got the MK2 300 2.8
I’ve ordered the R5 it’s due tomorrow
