Not sure if this id the right place for this but....My search for one of these in the UK has so far been pretty fruitless so I am considering looking further afield to Japan for both body and lens. The same sellers seem to pop up on Ebay are there any that people can recommend? What are the drawbacks apart from the obvious? Are there any to steer clear of?

Peter Loy has a Canon P body in stock right now - http://www.peterloy.com/stock-list.php - in general, he seems to get a few of those rarer rangefinders in on a semi regular basis.

I'd also get in touch with the folks at MW Classic - they tend to dabble in a wide variety of different cameras and eras, but they do have Canon screw-fit stuff on a sporadic basis. They've currently got 3 Canon P bodies, a fair few lenses, and a few Canon 7's as well if they float your boat. Vintage & Classic Camera are also worth getting in touch with. I consider their pricing a little bit optimistic personally, but they seem to be a reputable outfit, and their equipment seems to be honest and well described. They don't have any Canon P stuff in at the moment, but they do have a few L39 lenses and a nice looking Canon 7 with a 50mm f/1.4 - the faster lenses, especially the 50mm f/0.95, seem to now go for silly money (and all get thrown into conversion for Leica M-mount). http://vintageclassiccamera.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4&sort=20a&page=1

^^ I have clearly not been searching hard enough and yes the 7 is an option. Thankyou for the above.

Best of luck - they look like very interesting cameras, although I would budget for a CLA as they are getting on a bit.

Okay having a dim moment, CLA? Even the most expensive of those is cheaper than the versions I was looking at from Japan once tax etc is taken into consideration and peace of mind buying from the UK is worth a an amount as well.

After three unanswered emails and one telephone call where the chap was also talking to someone else and couldn't get rid of me quicker I would find it really hard to recommend this bunch at all.

I've dealt with the guys at MW Classic quite a few times over the years, although I've always gone in to their place and collected my order. I can sympathise with your experience a little, they are a somewhat chaotic to put it nicely but they are decent guys. Once you get past their haphazard approach to customer service there are bargains to be had.

Nick's experience is spot on - it's a slightly bizarre experience to shop with them, but they tend to buy and move a lot of stock quickly. You'll often see cameras languishing on second hand sites for years, whereas MW like to buy and sell much more speedily - and they virtually never reply to emails.

At the chance of being considered a grouch, that doesn't really help your average punter who does not know their arcane business practices. Why have an email contact sheet if there is no intention to reply or even attempt to find out my requirements when I did turn to a phone. I understand that what I want may not be instantly available, it's the nature of 2nd hand and I am prepared to be patient but I'm not really prepared to praise non existent customer service.

I know it's hard tp accept their style of customer service, I have a similar hate/hate relationship with another dealer who shall remain nameless. I just don't even bother looking at his stock anymore, I can't stand the stress and disappointment.
