Guys what would you say to this lens?

I've been thinking about getting a bigger telephoto, but not sure on what to get. I like a bit of range but also I like that fact I can pull it out to a wider shot also.

Now my question is, this sigma below, would you go for this or would you for the same money got for a 70-200mm Canon L lens? See I'm not sure... Always wanted a Canon Telephoto L but when I saw this my mind was torn...

What would be your choice....?

I'd go for the 70-200L IS lens ever time, just a choice of the 2.8 vs the f4 (and depends on how much cash you've got to spend. these L telephoto lenses are superb, i've got the f4 and a 1.4x teleconverter which drops it to a F5.6 but that's still faster than the sigma.

OK you don't have the same reach as the sigma, but is that going to be a problem for you ? also consider the weight of the thing, you've got to carry it around so is that an issue for you?

I have the Sigma 150-500 which I have been well pleased with. The lens you mention is the Image Stabilised version of the old 50-500 which was well respected. These lenses are relatively heavy compared to a 70-200 (I'm assuming it's not the 2.8) IQ is good. Your decision would need to be based on what focal length you need, 500mm is bird and wildlife territory which is what I use mine for.

at 500mm

How about a Canon 55-250mm IS f3.5-5.6 Superb image quality and cheap as chips!!!

As mentioned depends what you want it for, guessing the weight and probably slow AF wouldn't be great for sports, birds in flight etc

Looked at it myself and the 120-400, but in the end went for the 400mm f5.6 L because it suited my needs better

Andy is right about the 55-250 IS, bought one myself from a friend cheap to use as a standby and haven't replaced it yet

When I get some more spending cash will be looking at the 70-200 f4 IS, bit lighter than the f2.8 which again suits my purposes better

For that price, and dependant on your intended usage, I'd look at the following Canon lenses:

New 100-400mm
New 70-200mm f4 +change left over
Used 70-200mm f2.8 MkI

I have the Sigma 150-500 which I have been well pleased with.

I have the same lens for my Nikon - VERY pleased with it too !

Don't find the weight to be too much of a problem, 99% of the time it is on a monopod if I am moving round with it - very rarely use it hand held.
