hi All

i am looking at treating myself to a new (well second hand) camera

I am currently using a samsung Gx1s and have been happy with this rebadged pentax getting the photography bug in a big way and loving my hobby for the past 3 years

Now my dilemma is which way to move forward ??

been looking at nikon d90 or canon 550d

would be interested to know what your thoughts are ???

What about a pentax K-5 or Kr?

I don't think there's ever been a better time to invest further into the Pentax system, ignoring the minor disaster that is the K-01, Pentax have been bringing out consistently excellent equipment recently.

I certainly wouldn't move away from pentax without giving those cameras serious consideration.

Both are very good cameras.
For me, Canon have a very good range of lenses from cheap to expensive which was important when I started.

Both brands are well supported in the second hand market, so when you are starting out there's usually good prices to be had for the cheaper lenses as people upgrade.

There's a very subtle difference in feel to them so I suppose it's try both and see what feels right to you.

Depending on what you shoot, or how you travel, don't discount some of the other brands/types of cameras.

actually nikon have quite alot of good cheap to expensive lens as well. Can use older lens as well which is good.

Swings and roundabouts, i's an eternal argument. Both are excellent so go to a shop and feel them, decide which has the best ergonomics, and if you have a friend that already has one make then lean toward that for advice and lens swapping etc.....

Having used both the gx1 (it's my friends, but I shot a lot of photos at a wedding on this) canon 550d (mine), I think that you should either get some quality glass, or if you already have this, consider the k5.

Definitely something to consider if you want to use older manual focus glass - Canon completely changed their lens mount from "FD" to "EF" in 1987 but Nikon have maintained the classic "F" mount since 1959.

i do video work sometimes and i find the older manual focus prime is good to use when do video.

Some legendary nikon manual prime give me better optic then the newer lens.

many thanks for your advice and knowledge

have gone for a D90 (bought from a fellow TPer) should get it within the next few weeks
