No
I know there will be arguments for both camps :)

But I can't decide between a Canon 500D or a Nikon D5000.
Anyone want to offer their opinions? :)

Hi & Welcome

A few quick questions, that may help you decide

Have you any previous experience of either make ?

Does any family / friend have either make - might help in trying / sharing lenses, discussing settings etc ?

Have you picked up and tried both models your looking at, I would def recommend you do as you may find you prefer the controls / layout etc of one much more to your liking.

Choosing a Camera is a very personnal thing and you really need to try them out to see which your most comfortable with.
Hope this help, but .....

Good luck with your search

Go to shop, fondle cameras, see how it feels in your hand, can you access the buttons and do you like the menu system. Whichever one you prefer, buy! Simple! Its the only way to decide, otherwise all you end up with is people recommending you the brand they have.

This, however I will ask the standard questions.

Do you have anything in particular you want to take pictures of. The reason I ask is there might be particular accessories or additional lenses the you'll benefit from having from the word go.

Also would you consider second hand kit?

agree. nothing more has to be said .

next question ?

At this price point, most opinions will be worthless other than the one that says both cameras will produce almost indistinguishable results in the hands of the same photographer...

As others have said - it all comes down to personal preference and you'll have to get hands-on to see which one suits you better...

def go hold a few cameras... as a novice i went to buy a canon and came out with an olympus as it just felt right! the canon felt too small in my hand and for me uncomfortable, i carry my camera in my hand all day [dont bother with a neck strap] and its lovley and comfy! i would also try it with a battery grip on as for me that makes it even more of a joy to hold and use.... :)

2nd hand may be worth considering... i went to buy a canon 450d, for less money i got an Olympus E1 with 2 lens and a bag [£300] from LCE with 6months warrnty.. ok older, less pixles if you like to count them but my god what a peice of kit and its weather proof with the right lens [ish!!!]! :) for me i have no regretts this way, the olympus doesnt have any fancy functions [which you may be wanting to be creative etc] so i have had to learn how to take a photo and not had the luxuary of moderen computer chips working it out for me as much.. for me it has made be a better photographer..

as said before, its very personal and every body will tell you different. my 2pence worth would be to go for canon or nikon [my next camera will be] as there is much more useres of these camera so more advice available on TP and i think used lens etc are easier to find...

bob :)

As we have already established, there's very little between them,so it comes down to 3 factors really.

1 - how they feel, and whether you like the layout, the weight etc.

2 - access to lenses, if you have access to lenses from one brand or the other it gives that brand the advantage.

3 - price..there are some damn good deals available on the 500D at present with body only prices from £469 and with the 18-55 IS kit zoom £579.99 so slightly less than the D5000 which can be had for £499.99 for the body only and bundled with the 18-105 VR kit lens for £599.99
£30 isnt a lot, but its still the price of a hanhel spare battery.
