Canon or Nikon

I have been learning a little about digital before spending some money this spring on a new SLR. the latest model reviews for the two that I am considering seem to be about evenly matched, depending upon who you listen to.

I notice a lot of Canon users here; any thoughts (apart from price on the Canon 400D against the Nikon D80?

any help would be of assistance....
 
Hold both before you decide. Matt went to buy a Nikon, and came out with a Canon as it felt better to hold. There are Nikon users on here, when it comes to photos, I arent the best to advise, but I can say I am happy with my Canon.
 
oh boy....a question that keeps coming up....what is usally advised is to go to a camera shop and hold the cameras to get a feel of them in your hands...see which one you are most comfortable with...but I must tell you :nikon: lol

Sure you're not trying to start a war?? ;)

Best advice is to choose what suits YOU, not what you're told about either. Clearly the Nikon is inferior (just kidding!).

You may find the 400d a little small in your hands - not sure of the dimensions of the D80. Get yourself to a camera shop and hold them both, fire off a couple of shots and you'll have a good idea of which suits you.
 
thanks, I did that and must admit the Nikon felt better. just need to read up more on digital now I suppose before indulging myself. :geek: :shrug:

The feel of the camera is the main thing Smithy.

Other considerations are lens availability, pixel count, sensor size, ISO range, shutter speed and burst rate. I know the 400D has an new fangled in-camera dust buster, not sure about the D80.

Check out the reviews based on the above and do pros and cons on each camera.

perhaps some of the guys that own either on this forum could let you know so that you can check out some actual pictures?

For a moment I almost said "neither, buy the Sony" then I thought better of it.
 
I have looked at the reviews, this was what threw me. but I think the ideas of the pics sounds good!:D
 
There is nothing to beat going to a decent dealer who will allow you the time to get a feel for the cameras you are undecided about ... preferably with a range of the likely lenses you will consider ... :thumbs:

If you can take along a memory card for both and try and take a few pictures ... of the same subjects with both cameras ... you can then compare at your leisure at home ... assuming you have a card reader and PC ... or a friend who has ... :D

At the end of the day it is such a truly personal choice this is the only way you can be sure ... ;)

Believe it or not I did originally consider a 20D but doing precisely what I have described above and after thinking long and hard ... I eventually ended up with more Nikon gear ... :D

I have no idea what the Nikons like, but I do know the Canon will be fabulous.

Decide what you can afford, then look at cameras in that price bracket and decide what feels right to you.

I can say that while Canon may have the edge on quality, Nikon have the the lead on handling and robustness as far as I'm concerned.
I also have no complaints about image quality with the cameras I use.

Doesnt the kind of work your planning to do have an impact on which is the better system for you?

Im into motorsport, when I watch motorsport all the pro photographers are using Canons with big white lenses... Therefore I bought a Canon and a big white lens.

If your planning to do lowlight work (indoor, night-time) again Canon as ive heard Nikon give a noisier picture (grainy), but this may be a myth... This Page Kind of implies it is a myth.
 
Basically I doubt you would be dissappointed with either. Image quality wise from what I gather nikon images appear slightly sharper than the canons as they have a slightly stronger anti-aliasing filter and a few other minor differences. Nither camera is particularily "better" so its all down to personal preference with ergonomics and lens availability.

Personally I fell in love with the 20D when I tried it in the shop and since I was starting from scratch the canon lenses looked most appealing to me at that time too.

My advice is get to try both sides of the competition, some prefer nikon and some prefer canon. There is no clear cut answer its just personal preference.
 
I'm a beginner, so limited knowledge base, ;) but having avidly read loads of magazines on this subject it seems to come down to these three issues:

1. Lenses count more than bodies when it comes to quality images. Are there quality/cost issues involved?
2. Could you hand-hold it all day, if you needed to?
3. It ain't what you use, its the way that you use it (to paraphrase the song).

I agree with what everyone else has said about "go and try them out". Good hunting.......it's fun, but I would suggest you don't buy the first time you try........sleep on it and go back again a few days later.

I put that down to brainwashing, Canon have sponsored some motorsport at times, so the pro guys looking at them all the time through a tele lens ended up buying Canon...

Not that I'm saying Canon users can't think for themselves or anything... :whistling: :lol:

Yeah but that's only a D70. I doubt if the canon at the same price-point would have fared better.
I personally know two men who are alive today because their cameras stopped bullets - and they were both using Nikons.

That is the single best pro-Nikon argument I have ever heard.
 
I read the reviews I held the cameras. Originally looked at the 350D or the Nik D70 and then held the Canon 20D and that was the one for me.

Also from what I read, Canon cameras seem to be better at higher ISO. All I know is my 20D is a super camera with excellent noise control.

Also (not sure if this makes a difference) some of the Nikon's don't have ISO 100?!

Probably not a lot of difference. Weigh up the features that are important to you.

I don't know what happened to that D70 but it looks like it took it's fair share, died like a man :D
 
I agonised over the same issue. I eventually bought the Canon 30D because I wanted to use image capture software. i.e. shoot tethered to a laptop and instantly capture the images. This software is included with Canon but you had to pay an extra sum ('bout £140 I think) to buy the Nikon Version.

The 30D has a large LCD screen when compared to the 20D and is a big improvement. I am pleased with the 30D low noise at low light. nice skin tones, works well with dedicated flash guns too.

Best advice has already been given - Try before you buy.

Have you ever thought of offering that to the Nikon marketing department.
 
They have already - Don McCullin's Nikon F was used in an ad and the Army Photographer's D1 was also used, I think.
 
I had better be careful how I comment on this thread. When I read the first post, I thought if this doesn't split the camp I don't know what will. First film camera I had was a Nikon FM2 and then changed to a Canon EOS 50E & EOS 5 purely on the feel, shutter noise and the advice given by the dealer - and of course a woman's instinct. I have stuck with Canon ever since progressing up to a 20D and 5D now. I am happy with my gear but do agree with DreederUK with regards to the type of photography you will be concentrating on.

Word of advice - It is the quality of the lens that makes a snapshot into a memorable moment, so consider the lens you buy with whatever manufacturer you choose. Good Luck and we look forward to seeing your first images in here. :canon:
