Canon or Nikon? Pro's & Con's?

Just a quick thread which has no doubt been asked many times, but i'm interested to know people opinions on which is best Canon or Nikon and why you rate your choice.
 
I chose Canon mainly because they have a few more lenses.
 
My first DSLR was a 300D. Chosen for 2 reasons, 1 a friend shot Canon and 2 it felt right in my hands. Had I not bought at the time I may well have gone elsewhere because the 350D is just too small for me and I didn't know about things like battery grips when I first looked at DSLRs.

As for which is best, neither, both have their plus and minor points and as smeggypants has pointed out there are other makes out there with different benefits. If you want in body IS then you've got to look elsewhere etc.
 
I cannot believe that this question still arises after all this time!
To the OP, there are pro's and con's with ALL systems and no definitive answer. You may as well ask how long is a piece of string!

Or which make of car, TV, Phone, computer etc etc to buy.

If you have specific needs, say multiple wireless off camera flash, the ability to use old lenses, dual memory cards, stuff like that then ask away, lots of people on here to help, but your first question, just too general - sorry.

As mentioned they have more lenses than any other they also offer more bodies.

I love the feel of the canon 1D series and i would'nt swap my 600mm f4 i.s for anything unless it was a new one :D

Whereabouts in the range?
The only major difference IMO is that low end Canons feel cheap but are feature rich, whereas Nikon compromise features for quality.

But as others have said, more info is required for a proper answer.

If you're not getting into specialist fields there are some great cameras out there from the other brands.

However if you're considering super fast tele lenses, a great range of fast primes or T&S etc then stick to Canon Nikon.
 
Hi,, I asked myself the same question 2 months ago as a newby. With my little experience all of the top end features didn't really make any sense of difference so I purchased a nikon d50 to start out used from a dealer. To me, the important thing was that It felt really good and comfortable to hold, the compared canons felt a bit clumsy but it's a person taste. No doubt as I get more experienced as the other guys say I will develop specific needs which might lead me to another brand.
 
Canon because my 7D has a wee chrome bit on the wheel :D
 
If you into the whole Low Light thing, then IMO the Nikons do have the edge right now with High ASA's.

Thanks for your responses guys. I am relatively new to photography although I have quite a lot of kit. However, I went straight for Canon as the vast majority of people I spoke with prior to buying my set up advised me that they considered Canon to be the best kit of all. Probably not the most sensible of approaches but I am interested in what Nikon have to offer and I fully expect that it is as good if not better, but I really don't know.

I was think around pro's and con's such as:

Build quality
Noise
Features
Ease of use
Cost / value for money
Range of accessories (lenses, etc)
Resale value
Quality at high ISO
Etc.

Ultimately, if you ask a Canon owner which is best he's going to tell you it's Canon, ask a Nikon owner and they'll say Nikon. Very few people are going to say 'yeah, I bought X, but Y is better', everyone likes to think that they made the best choice.

I like and regularly use both nikon and canon professional bodies. Personally - I prefer nikon's, I think they feel nicer in your hand, and the button and menus make more sense. But at the end of the day, they all make the same pictures. The only exception here is that canons currently make better video, but that might well (read: bloody well better...) equalise when nikon release their new professional cameras at the end of august...

Totally personal thing, you will know which one is best when you pick it up and use it
 
Nikon and Canon are as good as each other. They each make our cameras and lenses out of the same stuff from which they create these other products. I am using Nikon and my brother is using canon, both are as good as each other.

Nikons are better than Canons except in the areas where it's the other way `round or where there are no significant differences.

Not quite that simple. My first dslr was was a Pentax K20 which I still have and am very happy with for near slow moving subjects. Unfortunately for aircraft and birds the lenses were not long enough and the AF not fast enough so I started looking into Nikon and Canon. I was looking at the Nikon 80-400 and the Canon 100-400. The Canon lens knocked the Nikon into a cocked hat in terms of AF speed so that is how I come to have a Canon as well as the Pentax. I dare say that there will be scenarios in which the Nikon will win.

ok. SIMILAR pictures >_>

There have been sets of pictures that I've seen where I can tell immediately that they were taken on canon or nikon - canon's pictures out of the camera seem to be a touch flatter and less contrasty and saturated than nikons. The 5d is a great camera though the AF sucks, and isn't as nice to shoot video with as the 7D, but it's second only to the 3* the price D3x at the moment (which is a freaking joy to work with, but still... 4.5K? you can get a lowend second hand phase one P30+ for that...)
 
At entry level the main difference for me seemed to be that Canon had an advanatge in resolution with Nikon having an advanatge in focus/ISO.

:thinking: indeed.

As I explained, there are times when one will be better than the other, and vice versa.

A camera/lens combination is a tool to do a job. Sadly there are no panacea out there.
