Canon OC-E3 Ettl compatible cable problems

Guys, I recently bought an extra long cable off ebay at about £15.00 when it first arrived I popped it inbetween the flash and camera it starts making the flash LCD do strange things and only intermittently pops the flash. I have tried it on another body and flash and its the same. once removed from the connection the flash ( directly attached) will fire normally and TTL meter etc. :help:

OK so its a faulty cable.. BUT... its only copper cable. So, I tested the thing with a meter. its all connected and I can assume from this that the Ettl signal has a finite range ( which might be why the Canon one is only a meter long :thinking: Does anyone out there have such a cable of about ten feet? does it work all/every time? and how much do you think I need to shorten it by to make sure it works?

I don't know why I,m bothering really.. as the 7d can act as a remote commander...:D
 
:thinking: I lobbed a 2 feet off and its fine now... its just shy of 10 feet long remaining length. So is that perhaps the accepted distance you can use an ETTL cable with a canon 7d and a 580EX ?? Who knows? The cable is very thin which makes me think that a better quality one of even longer length might be OK... Joe Mcnally regularily daisy chains the shorter Nikon ones together with no problems... I hope this is of help to anyone else with simliar problems.:shrug:
 
Interesting, I just tried mine a Yongnuo make bought off Ebay about three weeks ago. Not had the opportunity to try it till just now.
I do not have a 7D yet so used a50D and acouple of different 1 series.
No problems !!!
As you mention may be you have a faulty lead, is it this make ?
I only bought mine for outside use as I am always having problems with a
STE2 in bright sunlight.

Its a no name hong kong / ebay special. I,m not surprised it was faulty and I've put it down to poor quality copper in the cable used. Its fine now I've shortened it but... You can bet your life the next time I need this it will be too 2 feet too short :bang: When I,ve got time to solder one up again I'll get my mate to snaffle some cable from the sonar factory he works in. I might try a silly length just to test the theory... Maybe ten yards to start with:nuts:

Would be interested if that works and the type of cable used.
