Hi All

Im looking at purchasing my first DSLR (Budget £800) ish haha you know how it goes.

Could anyone recommend a body / lens package out there and should i go Canon or Nikon??? Will be used mostly for stills and quick films of horses and jousting so quite a few distance and fast moving shots.

Cheers

Best advice: avoid starting a Canon Nikon debate lol.

Ime a fuji person, nikon body and parts etc, reason I use them is because I like them and find them comfotable to use (important that!)

have a look at the specs online, most cameras that are new have some kinda movie mode built in, then get to a shop and see how it feals in your hands, if it feals natural its the one for you.

this is definatly gonna start a massive debate!
try them in your hands, just like barry said.

Go to a shop and try the feel of them. What feels right matters a great deal.
Whatever body you get, a zoom lens covering 50 to 250 or 300mm will suit well.

As for Canon or Nikon? That question could start a torrent of replies.
I have no experience of Canon DSLR's, but there are loads of excellent pics from Canons on here and loads of excellent Nikon pics (excellent pics from other brands too).

1) You won't be able to tell a Canon image from a Nikon image.
2) Any modern DSLR has more potential than YOU will ever realise.
3) They feel different in your hands, so pick them up and have a play with the menus etc.
4) Buy which ever one meets your requirements in terms of features and budget and as long as it feels good in your hands you'll be happy.
5) Take photos and enjoy.

Its honestly all about comfort. At that price range your going to get a nice camera, from either company, capable of everything you want and more. Look at what you want to do with it in the future, if you have any idea, and look at which company offers the most support (extra lenses etc... ) for what you want.

Best advice is to go in a store, hold them, feel how they sit in your hands and choose from there.

Canon vs. Nikon doesn't exist any more.

It's specific body vs. specific body, regardless of manufacturer. Both companies produce excellent bodies and lenses, and their cameras are geared for different things.

hi and welcome:)

Best advice - Go and try all the manufacturers offerings, and buy the one that fits YOUR budget, and feels best in YOUR hands, with a control system that YOU find the most intuitive.

Reviews and reccomendations are just other peoples personal view point, but why they bought one particular model is not necessarily why you should.

I can agree with this, but that does not mean opinions aren't valid. If somebody who's experienced shooting the same kind of thing that you would like to shoot, I would listen to their opinions.

For example, if I was looking to shoot fast action sports, I probably wouldn't listen to the studio or landscape photographer banging on about a D3x with 24mp when I need the high ISO performance and 9fps of a D3s. :)

Both make some great cameras as do many other manufactures. I buy Nikon as my first camera was a Nikon and so all my lenses are Nikon fit. I think if I was to start all over again I may even get a Sony as I really fancy a go with a auto focus mirror lens with vibration reduction. I think look at what you want for the camera and what you are going to use it for. Then go have a go with them your self and pick the one you feel happy with that can do what you want :)
