Canon Nifty Fifty advice please.

Hi all. I recently bought a Nifty 1.8 Mk.2. I'm wondering if I need hood with this lens.

might be useful , yes. If you shoot pretty wide open in sunny environment etc.

It will also provide some protection to the outer element - against knocks and scrapes

I'd be quite careful with a hood on it. I broke mine with a gentle knock on the barrel which broke it clear from the main bit, so it would be even easier with a hood on it.

The front element is set pretty deep....

I am not sure I would bother.....

i don't bother with a hood, if the situation requires it use your hand

Yeah, i found that too so I wasn't too bothered. That aside its certainly an intersting time using a prime as you have to think a bit more about composing the shot and moving your feet rather than use the zoom. Still good though
