Canon M50+kit lens £399 during Amazon Prime day today.

That is a lot cheaper than normal! Half tempted myself to run along side my RP/R. I think even from the "dodgy" like of eglobalcentral and such its not even that cheap!

Couldn’t resist it...my GAS got the better of me :runaway:

If I can claim the £60 cash back from Canon too...then I will be majorly chuffed :woot:

In what way? Cant say I ve found it anything other than really useful for giving me a longer reach with my fast lenses. Same with my 5D4.

Besides the fact it has no DP in 4k and turns a wide angle into telephoto with a teeny tiny aperture and only offers 1" sensor performance, nothing.

Hmmm, its an entry level camera, you know that’s right? As for performance, can you show me what you mean by only offering 1’’ as in why thats an issue.

In fact why even bother posting in here as you obviously have not interest in the camera.

Don’t get all precious, you asked.

Shame about the huge 4k crop.

Only if you're buying one for that reason, if you're buying just for photography then it doesn't matter whatsoever. Most people who buy them with video also in mind just use them as 1080p cameras and they're just fine for that. I still think 4K is way over-rated, I've watched some vlogs where half-way through the presenter would state they were shooting in 1080p and I'd not have noticed otherwise because I have YT set to that res anyway. I can watch 4K or 2K at least, but it can take ages to load and unless it's something with good eye-candy then I see no point. Wildlife video would benefit and maybe sports, but if all you're shooting is a vlog style video then even 720p is good enough.

I'm on my third 4K camera now and I've made use of it about 5 times. Video just isn't my thing, so I'd see no handicap with the M50 bar no IBIS. I did consider one in the past but just experimented with adapters for M43 cameras instead

Was my comment not specific? Good point, why move on, should’ve really stuck to vhs.

The one I quoted? Wasn't much to it really only there's a 4K crop - what's supposed to be specific about it? You don't say anything about buying one without caring about 4K so what's your point?

The rest of my post is just my general view on it.

I’m on holiday this week so when it arrives (on Thursday) I hope to test both the stills and video capabilities including the 4K. As much as I enjoy shooting video it’s the stills side of the camera that interest me the most. I specifically wanted something that would take good quality photos with decent autofocus and ,in particular, a vari-angle screen. At the price I got it for I’m hoping it doesn’t disappoint....time will tell :snaphappy:

If you're serious about 4K then you're looking at other cameras really, the Panasonic M43 cameras do much better 4K and have IBIS which is why people who really care for video go for them. Best to view 4K on the M50 as a bonus - it's there if you want it

It’s very specific and to the point for anyone interested in 4K otherwise I would’ve discussed stills.

In your head maybe. Only the first couple lines in my post were related to yours, feel free to ignore the rest - saying 'pity about the 4K crop' is a bit of a useless post tbh when it's about a camera not many actually buy for 4K ... am I not specific enough? do I have to keep explaining clearly obvious things for you? You seem to have a poker up yer rear the last few days with the nit picking. I don't know why you popped in here either as it's clearly not a camera you're interested in

I don’t need to respond to the rest, I never spoke about stills or your usage. You are saying it’s not an issue because you have no requirement for video or see no difference between 1080p and 4K, potential buyers interested in 4K, which there are many, can see if it’s an issue or not for their own usage.

Well. as I said! Many users of this very camera see it as what i stated, a 1080p camera with cropped 4K as a bonus. I'm not sure why this had to be nit picked but it's TP, that'll happen regardless

And it’s worth being aware of the 4K crop. I’m not sure why people got so upset about it when it was mentioned.

I didn't :D Just saying for many it's probably not a big deal. If you really want decent 4K there's better cameras for it that can be had for about the same money, at least used. Like the G80 I had, 4K was very good on that, and it's got IBIS - sure it's M43 but the ISO performance and DR of M43 isn't much different to Canon APSC.

But ... for those who just simply prefer Canon and are only very casual about 4K, then it's not a big problem really. I believe the 1080p is very decent and it does have DP-AF

Don’t get all precious, you asked.
I’m not getting precious, and yes i asked, but you haven't given me an answer yet. I assume you dont own this camera, so as someone who does I’d really like to know why it’s a shame about the 4K crop, and the other things you mentioned. Am i to assume me likening the camera is wrong?
And as i also asked, why come in here just to slag it off.

If you can’t see why it’s a shame after I posted the reasons then that’s great for you, because the 4K suits your requirements. When did I say you liking the camera was an issue? I said it’s a shame about the crop and potential purchasers should know. Why be a fanboy and pretend it’s perfect (for everyone)?

You’re quite opinionated and rude arent you?
I’m not pretending its perfect at all, when did i say that, i just said I didn’t find it a limitation. i said why i liked it and you jumped on it with all the negatives, liek i didn’t know what i was talking about. Calling me names because of this is childish, I’d expect better from someone of your experience.
Obviously you do have an issue with me liking soemthing, otherwise you wouldn’t call me names.

Ill end it here and leave this thread. I was only posting a heads up anyway.

This ain't the Sony thread, I don't see anything of the sort only someone posting up a bargain alert, bit of positivity doesn't go astray on here now and then, try it some time

I was only posting a heads up anyway.

That's precisely what I saw it as nothing more, and seems it pleased a few people, just ignore the bah-humbugs

Nope, I made a simple post about a possible issue (for some) and you asked what the issue was because it doesn’t effect you. I don’t have an issue with you liking the camera and I said that it’s great that it works for you.

It’s a very good deal, never said it wasn’t, just that the crop is a shame.

I posted a comment, you asked why, I responded and you came back with “In fact why even bother posting in here as you obviously have not interest in the camera.” If I had no interest I wouldn’t have known that it could potentially be an issue for some, especially when jumping on a time limited deal without doing some research.

If you don’t like the Sony thread why are you in there all the time and calling Sony users fanboys elsewhere and allowed to have your opinion? Maybe you should try take your own advice.

Think things are going a bit astray here.

To be honest it is a shame the camera has such a huge 4K crop because Canon have aimed it squarely at the video bloggers market but at the same time any prospective buyer should be aware of the limitation before buying and it certainly doesn't detract from what was an excellent buy and a fantastic little camera for everyday use.

Anyway, the deal is over now.

how does this compare to the Sony RX100 III and IV?

Compare? Well its a different ball game entirely, this is an interchangeable extremely compact model whereas the Sony RX are compact cameras with a fixed (albeit super quality) lens, and are much much smaller. In terms of quality, the M50 should win given its larger sensor etc. If you want a direct review, I suggest you check out the samples and review page on DP Review - there you can directly compare the camera against a myriad range of others

I was referring to YOU specifically being the Sony fanboy,. I think you actually do need things spelled out.

Back to your old ways eh, hypocrite. ;)

MY old ways? you turned the OP off of his own thread, impressive, now you're trying to pass the buck. If you mean telling people some home truths then I've never changed. Every time someone mentions a possible switch to any other system you're in like a shot to tell them Sony is the only way. Am I wrong? I'd only have to look through your recent posts. The only shocker is you didn't do it here but still managed to ruin the thread. I'd love to hear your explanation as to how I'm a hypocrite though, go on give me a laugh.

As for the Sony thread, yes I do post there when it suits me - didn't know you had to be one of the Sony clique gang! I don't really care if there's fanboys or not. As you know I was interested in buying a Sony, and had actually bought one before having to pull out because of ridiculously high insured delivery costs from the UK. unlike you I have interest in all makes and models I'm not tied to any.

It's a mini ML 80D with 4K as a bonus. And tonnes of vloggers still only shoot 1080p as I said earlier. I'm sure anyone thinking on it would do their research, or they should

Don’t need to, straightforward comment potential purchasers should be aware of, I wasn’t going to write a review and bang on about personal use case like you did.

You are very wrong about that, but I don’t have to prove how many cameras I’ve owned and enjoyed to you.

Do I need to explain to you how you are a hypocrite again.

You haven't explained the first time, do you know what it even means? since you are being one you might like to know. Trying to pawn off on me that I'm 'back to you old ways' - whatever that means, when you're back to exactly that, your old cranky ways. I didn't get upset by any means btw, it would take more than your nonsensical posts. It was the OP who got annoyed and you just kept banging on mindlessly. Your original post pre-edit only said 'pity about the 4K crop' - seemed like a negative for the sake of it. It wasn't just me read it as such. Deal is over now and thread is redundant so I'll leave you arguing with yourself there, good lad

You say people should be positive and suggest not to use terms like fanboy yet you use it at every opportunity. Banging on? You 2x were the ones banging on about a straightforward fact and responded because you didn’t like it. Yes, the crop is a negative (for a lot of people).
