After much deliberation and after selling my 18-55 55-250 and tamron 17-50 vc I decided to buy the Canon 15-85 is usm f/3.5-5.6 and it is without a doubt the sharpest, the most ideal focal range, the better build quality, the better IQ and the most accurate AF, lens I have ever owned and very rarely I feel the need to go beyond 85mm ( which I will buy a Tamron 70-300 vc USD for), so why am I still lusting over the Canon 24-105 is usm f/4L ?!

Because it has a red ring ?

Joking aside the 15-85mm multiplied by 1.6 crop is giving you equiv to 24-136mm. Identical width at the short end to the 24-105mm on a full frame body.
The 24-105 on your 1.6 crop would give you equiv to 38-168mm so you would have to question whether that's a useful focal range or not.
I could see why you might be after a 24-70 f2.8 but at F4 through the range the 24-105mm isn't a huge jump compared to the 15-85mm at it's longest focal length.
If you rarely go above 85mm and are happy with everything else - I'd stick with it unless you're looking to move away from EF-S for future full frame upgrade.

When we had a 7D, the 15-85 was on it 99% of the time. In fact, I thought it gave better (crisper/slightly sharper) images than the 24-105L on it (which I also own).

24-105 on a ff...70-200 on a crop...my ideal 5d & 50d combo...just got 5d so living the dream...but 24-105 on a crop is not worth it unless you need the length...

I could see why you might be after a 24-70 f2.8 but at F4 through the range the 24-105mm isn't a huge jump compared to the 15-85mm at it's longest focal length.

True. Perhaps I'll look into the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD but at the moment it's way too expensive for me.

You're better off with the 15-85. I've got the 24-105L and it just sits collecting dust, it's sharp, af is great but f4 just doesn't do anything for me (im a prime addict)

15mm on crop is far more impressive than 24mm anyway.

Pesonally I think it's L lust gone mad :D Be honest, would you really want the 24-105 f4 if it wasn't an L?

I have a FF now but in my APS-C days I had a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 which was so sharp I could shave with it and there's no way I'd have swapped it for a bigger and heavier f4 lens that wasn't anywhere near as wide. The only advantage I can see for this lens is that it's longer than your APS-C lens and if longer is your aim I'd say fill your boots but personally I'd stick to a f2.8 for a standard range zoom and possibly add another lens for longer zoom. Actually, personally I wouldn't, I'd buy primes :D

I am still considering a prime, the sigma 50 f1.4 for that matter but am too worried to order online because of its focusing issues as I hear there's copy variations but when u find a good copy it's supposed to be stunning.

The only advantages I can see are the red ring and gaining an extra stop of light at the long end as well as 23.2 mm more length

Stop lusting over the 24-105 until you go full frame and stick with the 15-85 is.

I’ve have used this lens on a crop body and its nothing special and I often thought about selling it, but once I bought a 5d mk2 it’s the best thing since slice bread I wouldn’t be without it now.

I'm assuming ur getting the 15-85? Do it u won't regret it. Best thing I did was getting rid of the 18-55 and 55-250, although I liked the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 vc it had to go back as it was faulty and the next copy I got was soft so I gave up and went for the 15-85, stunning bit of kit.

I made the jump from a 18-135 to the 24-105 lens and find it brilliant, my downside is I must have some thing with IS so the 24-70 f2.8, even though its sharp it looks bob with me as things are abit blury without the IS.
I do have primes like the 50 and 85mm's but still I like a little bit of flexability.
Im aiming to own a 70-200 f2.8 MkII IS this next 12 months though.

I have a Tamron f2.8 117-50...great lens...non IS...so defo the 24-105 IS for me on 5D FF...

Worth mentioning...love my 50d...but really love my 5d Mi...FF is great and for an 'older camera' feels and photos great...especially for the cost...
