I have a 40d and a Tamron 17-50 F2.8.
I am looking to get a £100 ish zoom to try. Canon and sigma do a range from around 70-300. Some get poor reviews for build etc.
Which would be a good bet second hand?

55-250mm IS! Just over 100 quid second hand and a belter of a lens for the price. Do a search on the forum and you will find it is very much recomended.

The 55-250 IS really is a little belter for the money.

:plusone: or is it 4

For the money, the Canon 55-250IS is a belter and def worth getting. If you do decide it's not for you, you'll easily be able to sell on at a small loss.

There is a mark II version out, but the differences are purley cosmetic, the optical side remains the same, so don't worry about getting a mark I...

Same as all the rest, have to pay a lot more to beat the 55-250mm IS

The 55-250mm is a good lens for the money, but if you really want something under £100 you could try and pick up an older 70-210mm f4. Not the fastest auto focus, but the optical quality is superb and a really solid lens. I managed to get one on ebay for £65, but they are becoming very popular now.

I just managed to pick up a EF75-300mm lens, seems ok espcially for the price, I was looking at getting the 55-250 IS but found the other lens first at a cheap price.

Just been looking at these. Some say as good as L glass! Now looking for a bargain!

You've just bought possibly one of the worst Canon lenses on sale today.

If only you paid a few quid more for the 55-250 you'd have had one of the best telephotos going for the price.

I guess you live and learn!

Well it was only £50.00 and doesn't look like it has been used, I was thinking of getting the 55-250 IS anyway and then selling the 75-300mm on.

Was just to get me by for abit

I used to have a 75-300mm before I could afford a decent lens. If I recall correctly it was very sharp at 75mm, but very soft at 300mm. I found it usable up to about 200mm so if you stick to the 75-200 range it should get you by until you can afford something better.

£50 isn't bad I suppose, to keep you going.

The whole idea was to get the 55-250mm anyway and just use this for awhile, I'm guessing from these posts that to get a lens in the same sort of range as the 55-250mm but better would cost alot more as most people are saying it punches above its weight.

Hi James, just had a quick look on ebay and found this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-70-...=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item4cfd9ce911 or this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-70-...=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item3370e72c80 I hope these are the one you are looking for as there are a few on there with the FD mount and not that many with the EF mount that's working. If you don't get one of these, like everyone else just about I'd go for a 55-250 IS as they are terrific lenses for the price. Good luck in finding something.

Guys, thanks. Stuart, sorry, I hadn't updated but a copy of that lens was delivered today to my office. I have yet to try it, but lok forward to.
It is an EF lens, thanks.

No problem James, I was only killing time browsing anyway. Hope you get on all right with your new lens and hope to see some of your photos on here with it.

Here is the KR review, notice the disadvantage of no IS, i'd rather have the IS personally than f4 all the way, good luck with whatever you choose but for me its the 55-250mm IS

Best wishes
Cliff
