Canon Long Lens dilemma (600mm Vs 500mm)

All this shunting and before dinner time! :D

That all makes some interesting reading! :p

Thanks Ian for the offer. That's just brilliant really!!
It was no surpise that my local stores didn't have any super telephotos in store! I'll definitely take up on the offer of Ian and Agger in the near future, probably after I move to Coventry in mid October!
I'll probably have the money by December or January. I hate credit cards or loans so I always save the money up front for any purchase. I actually have a separate savings account for these purchases. I call it the "my little secret account".;) It now has £0.13 in it :p. That's a good start isn't it?

Hi,

I would check prices nearer the time with Ian ( Kerso ) the last quote I got from him for a 500mm was £3400 collected so you might manage one a wee bit earlier at that price ;)

Also I have just had confirmation from the guy I bought my second 393 that it is the 357 plate that fits as per the links posted by myself, Ian and old Aggers too :D

Mike.

Wow, that's about £500 less than the cheapest i could find from a UK shop on the internet. That's quite a saving. Thanks Mike for that, I'll defo contact Kerso when the time comes!

Do you guys reckon the MN393 be ok with my 600 F4?

Yes definately, and the best £100 worth of value you'll get in photography

Ok on both tripod and monopod?

Sorry for the questions, but its the first heavy lens I have had.

I have used it on my monopod BUT it gets a bit unwieldy and thats with a 500mm, I'm sure you'd get used to it though:thumbs: it's all about time spent familiarizing yourself with the head and lens:thumbs:

LOL, who's called Morris Photo asking about the 393 plates then? I was told it's wierd someone asked me the same question earlier and I'm getting the plates in to see ;)

Nice to see them going the extra mile to help us out :)

Dammit, that is another hundred gone.......:D

Just got my Gitzo legs from Ian, and I'm using the 393 head as well. Is the general consensus to let the lens dangle or sit(if you see what I mean..!!) both seem to work, and I'm going to do some trials but thought I'd get some input from the old timers...:D:D

Sit!! It's the smoothest in use and the safest way to get the lens mounted and unmounted too.

Thanks, CT, that's what I've been doing but I think (and will need to check this) it's shown as dangling in the sketch which comes with the lens. But I'll check that.

Yep - you can use it that way, I suppose if you wanted more up /down range of movement with the lens, but if you have a blonde moment and loose the camera with those torque screws eased off, the lot is gonna zonk over with a real whack! With the camera hanging in the cradle and balanced, it's a lot more stable.
