Well the 70-300 is the non APO version which is the not so good one.
Pricewise it isn't bad if you don't get stung for import duty & tax.
 
well, just got a 55-250 IS myself. Would like a bit more reach tbh, so maybe best for you to look into a 300mm. And everyone raves about the nifty fifties now. But they're inching towards £70 each now...
 
Sounds like a few low-light situations in your interests, so maybe replace your 18-55 with a fast standard zoom? Sigma 18-50 2.8 or Tamron 17-50 2.8 perhaps.
 
I love my sigma 30mm 1.4

but I'd also look at the sigma 50mm 1.4 as it's a bit closer and better for portraits.

also sigma 70-300mm is a good start for a telephoto lens.
