Hi, I'm going to purchase a Canon 40d after christmas, I have a couple of Canon lenses which I bought for a 50e a few years back. My question is will I be able to use them on the 40d?

Yes, no problem IF they are Canon lenses. If they are 3rd party lenses with a Canon EOS mount then you may have compatability problems.

Should be OK Bob, the OP says, 'I have a couple of Canon lenses'.

All Canon EF lenses fit and work on all Canon EOS cameras: film, xxD, xxxD, and the 1D (series) and 5D (series) cameras.

Some older Canon EF lenses produce good IQ and some are not really very good.

Canon FD manual focus lenses cannot be adapted at a reasonable cost to work on EOS cameras... That is a darn shame because there are some FD lenses with great optics. As an example, the manual focus 50mm f/1.8 FD lens has better image quality than either the present 50mm f/1.8 Mark-II or previous Mark-I lenses. They are available dirt cheaply too.
