Hi all

i am seriously thinking of buying the Canon 70-200 mm EF f4 L, would it be a wise investment for my 550D. or is there a suitable alternative?

thanks guys, will get the money ;). one more question would having no IS be a problem?
 
Had mine for 18 months now. Havent had a problem with it. Some say the IS version is better but then its almost double the price. I'd say go for it:thumbs:

Yes if you got shaky hands, but most of the time you can sit on a tripod i would go for the IS verson the 70-200 is ok in bright light but crap in dull sky or night shots

Oh you'll like it very much, I remember the time I got mine and it was brilliant, the difference in focus speed was the first thing I noticed - it was unbelievably quick...

Not a problem, but it can help you out. If you can afford the IS version, then I would go for it as it can make the difference if a tripod / monopod isn't available / practical. If you can't afford it, then don't worry about it and enjoy the non IS version - you will be able to save and sell this on at a later stage for a good price if you feel that the IS is needed / wanted. I had the non IS version for a long while and was very pleased with it :thumbs:
 
thanks guys, i will buy it now/few weeks. i could just afford the IS version but i have other things to buy :). i sometimes use ISO1600 and there is hardly any IQ loss or neglegible. is it true that i will dislike any other lens from now on?
 
As far as a lens goes, from the reviews I have read, it's a cracker.

I think you need to ask yourself why you think you need one and what would you use it for.

I know this because I am also thinking about the same lens.
 
i want the lens because im bored of the kit lens and want better IQ
 
It's a fantastic lens and on you'll hopefully be very impressed with it. What subjects do you/will you be shooting?
 
my subjects will be people, location, studio and street
 
I don't tend to take portraits, but when I have with this lens, I've loved the way I've been able to isolate the subject from the background using a shallow DOF.

It is easily the best zoom I had and still have - and the IS version is meant to be even better.


I don't see how ISO 1600 carries only a negligible loss of IQ unless there is something seriously amiss elsewhere.
 
I am thinking the same as you about buying this lens, mainly for motorsport (bikes) just thinking it would be a bit short though & need 300 minimum, i also have a 550D and use an old 100-300mm 4.5/5.6 USM at the moment, someone recommended the Canon 70-300mm f4/5.6 IS USM and has good reviews at affordable price, Col
 
If you go for the 70-200 L without IS - and use external flash like in a studio enviroment or when taking portraits then non IS would not matter is that correct, because with flash you would have the light.

the only problem without IS would be when using no flash?

Is this correct?
 
The F4 70-200 was the first telephoto zoom lens I purchased, a year or so after acquiring my 450D. For what you pay, even new, I can not fault it. After using it for a few years, for all sorts of scenarios, I'm not sure the IS or even 2.8 would help me out that much when working in poor light. I'd rather a prime for when that situation arises.

So, as long as you aren't expecting amazing results in the dusk, the F4 really is a great lens. Colours look fantastic, USM will leave you wanting it on anything you buy going forward, it's silent and produces some fantastic results. It's just not very subtle; people will stare!
 
After just checking mine, that I have just this minute received from a guy on the forum for £370, I can honestly say go for it. Just stuck it on the wifes 550Dand took some pics outside in the fog. The images are absolutely perfectly sharp, I thought about saving for the IS version but am so glad now that I didn't delay. I only took about a dozen pics so far, but they are all tack sharp. Took the neighbours car and cats portraits. Cant wait to try it on the 7D or my 5D2 now.
