Canon Lens Problem

I bought a lens off ebay the other week and everytime i attach it to the body i get err99. I got a full refund and the guy told me to keep it so ive won there anyway.

Today ive covered the contacts on the lens with insulating tape and bar any auto focus or aperture value change the lens works fine.

Ive basically just made it a total manual lens.

Will this harm the body in any way if i keep using it.

What lens is it?

The thing I would worry about is sticky gunk from the tape getting onto the camera's contacts, could be nasty to clean off.

What lens was it that you got?

I have an old Sigma lens that generates an error when on a digital body though I can get it to work if I set the camera into Aperture priority mode and set the aperture wide open.
