Hi all

A friend has a canon 100-400 IS lens, brought it secondhand and noticed alot of dust spots on his pics, asumed that there was dust on the sensor etc etc and got a cleaning kit. Anyway turns out that there are fine micro fibres on the inside of the glass lens and further examination proved there was alot of nasties lurking inside via looking in the lens at a sewing day lamp bulb

The question is Who in the UK can clean and service this as he was quoted £245 from LCE Nottingham, as they said that it has to go back to Canon and that there is a 6 week turn around.

Thanks
Chris B

Sound like it got bits in it, but wouldnt think they would show up in the pictures.
Check out the Canon website for a local Canon service centre.

Ive had good service from

H. Lehmann Limited
Fixation
Canon

My preference is for Lehmann and Fixation.

I'm sure LCE were putting their markup on that too.

Lehmann is not far from you give them a call book it in and they maybe able to do it while you wait.

I used Colchester Camera Repairs recently, and got a fantastic service. Door to door in 3 days, cheap too.
Be very suprised if the dust is from the lens though.

Dean:)

Canon's centre of competence at Elstree is worth a call, their phone no is 00800 22 666 767. then option1 then option 3.

Oh and also their turn round at the moment is under 2 weeks ( although I'm a CPS member so that possibly helps).

I would say thats sensor dust / debris. Dust in lenses dosnt usually show up like that, as its away from to point of focus ie the sensor.

Colchester camera's wont do the lens, they will only send it to canon.
Or so they told me when I thought my 100-400 was faulty.

they do appear on the inside of the lens as the sensor is clean as it was done twice under the assumption that their was dust on the sensor, but the daylight bulb shows those fibres in the lens

put a different lens on and in daylight take a pic of the sky, around f22-32. and have a look at that. Cleaning a sensor and putting a lens on full of bits will just let the sensor's charge attract the bits onto it so its pointless cleaning a sensor if the lens has bits in it.

I have a lens full of dust and not one of them shows up in any photographs i have taken.

Have to agree that is a picture showing sensor dust and another lens (kit lens or 50mm say) set to f22 will show the same spots and maybe more too.

Interesting thread.. bookmarking...

Definitely just sensor dust! Lenses can gather a lot of dust and crap inside them without having any adverse effect on image quality.
