Hi There.
I'm in a dilemma. I'm currently saving up for a new lens and in May time I will have hopefully not far off the £1,000 mark.

The question is. What lens?
I have a couple in mind, but I dont know which to go for.

My lens ideas at the moment;
Canon 24mm-70mm F2.8
Canon 24-105mm F2.8
Canon 70-200mm F2.8 + Canon 1.4 Teleconvertor.
Canon 70-200mm F4 + Canon 1.4 Teleconvertor.

Lenses I have at present;
Canon 18-55 F3.5-5.6 Kit Lens
Canon 50mm F1.8 Prime Lens
Sigma 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 Lens

I realise the lens choice is based on what I take photographs off so I will try and help you out. I enjoy portraiture and aircraft shots.
I'm thinking my best option would be the 70-200mm with the TC
This was I can use it for both the Portraiture and Aircraft.
I know 70mm is slightly on the long side for Portraits, but I also have a 50mm F1.8

Please let me know what you think would be my best option.

Many Thanks
Jamie

If you're planning on taking shots of aircrafts airborne, then the 200 end with 1.4 x is invaluable, so if you must have one lens, then anything around the 300mm mark would be good for them, plus the 70mm end for portraits.

That would be my choice :)

That's my thinking too, the Sigma 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 is very slow at the 300mm end.

Only thing is what F will the 70-200 F2.8 Lens be at with a 1.4x TC on it?
I know I will get the added L glass quality and sharpness too, so anything around the F4 with the TC would be great.

Are you wanting to use your new lens for portraiture and aircraft shots? Why not use your existing line up for the portrait end - They all cover the basics.

Then get a prime such as the 300mm or 400mm (not sure which is best for these type of shots) for the aircraft stuff?

Wide open, you'll get f4

swag72 - I was giving you an idea of what I like to shoot. I tend to shoot more out-and-about shots, as I'm away at uni. But when I go home I enjoy aircraft shots.

I think a prime might be a bit limiting ***. As depending on my location it may be too zoomed in or out. I would personally prefer the flexibilty. I realise the prime has better quality and sharpness however.

Any reason why you've opted to ignore the 100-400mmL for the aircraft shots?

Personally I'd go for a 24-70mm for portraiture, 70-200mm f2.8 (plus TC) for portraiture/aircraft and a 100-400mm for aircraft .You're gonna need a whole lot more than £1000 for that lot though even if you'd be happy with secondhand.

(incidentally, if you find a 24-105mm f2.8 BUY IT!;))

Gofer - Reason I chose to ignore the 100-400mm F4-5.6. Is mainly because of the F numbers. I have a 300mm with F5.6 at the moment, want something quicker. I understand that it has the extra 100mm focal length, but I dont feel I would use it.

I would prefer a lens that has more practicality, not just for the one off event.
I dont expect to get the whole lot for £1,000. I was saying that's the sort of price I would expect for 1 lens

I think the 700-200mm F2.8 with the TC would be the better option as it allows me to do Portraits and Aircraft at the same time. As I only get to shoot aircrafts a select few times a year I would prefer having this for the portraits too.

Why should I rush to buy the 24-105mm F2.8? Surely it's the same as the 24-70mm but with a bit more focal length?

If anyone else has any recommendations, please feel free to comment.

Because there isn't one?!!!! But if you can get Canon to make it just for you....................... !!

There is the 24-105 F4 - Do you mean that?

Yes I probably mean that one
Sorry  haha

Cheers

So I'm guessing the general verdict is a 70-200mm F2.8 with a 1.4x TC
Anyone have a rough price that'll cost me. I assume it's around the £1,000 bracket?

Cheers

Have you considered the sigma 100-300mm f4 (£750), meets both you needs for portrait and aircraft, is better than the 70-200mm f2.8 & 1.4x TC combo, I know trust me, I've got one, not impressed with that combo, especially for aircraft, use a 300mm f4 for aircraft, and use the 70-200mm f2.8 for motorsport, great lens on its own. As for the aircraft lens 300mm for most airshows is just not enough, at shoreham (in good light) was using 1.4x TC with 300mm f4 and at airbourne or most airshows the 100-400mm is the affordable weapon of choice, I know it will struggle in poor light, but you next series of lenses for airshows are the 300mm, 400mm and 500mm primes, and you really need a bank loan from the ex chairman of RBS to afford them at the moment.

Bang on what I would go for. The non IS is still just as good but at those prices, personally I would just save that bit extra and get the IS ver. Either are great.

Well I've been going to Coningsby and Scampton, and 300mm seems to work fine to get the plane in the frame without cropping.

Thing is I dont want to be getting a lens that starts at 100mm, especially If i wanna be using it for portraits too.

I'll see

Cheers

Dunno why you are buying now....if you dont really need the lens now then you should probably wait, £300 for a tc, wtf?

or you could save quite a bit of money by buying some second hand Sigma lenses. You could get a 24-70 + 70-200 + 1.4TC for the same price as the Canon 70-200 alone :)

ye I probably could get the sigma lenses for that price.

I have two sigma lenses now and i much prefer the canon versions of both the lenses. I think its just the L quality thing kicking in
Looks soo much nicer in white than matt black

But I would be looking at a 70-200mm F2.8 non-IS USM and a 1.4x TC.
See if i can get them second hand for around the £700 bracket.

Cheers Jamie
