Hi all, so I've decided the two things I'm missing from my arsenal of lenses is a telephoto and a macro.

Best I've got is a 24-70 sigma 2.8 EX DG.. Which isn't exactly telephoto at 70mm and isn't too great for macro (can't remember the exact spec)

So is there a decent lens for canon that can do something up to maybe 200mm that is also great for macro? I've been looking at the Canon L 70-200 f4?

My budget is around £400, more than likely purchasing second hand.

..or is it a case of buy a telephoto and buy a macro.. I won't find a lens that does both?

Thanks!

I have the canon 100mm f2.8 macro which i bought for approx £400 new, cracking lens no complaints. I think the only way you will get anything like macro action from the 70-200 is to use some extension rings since it's closest focus distance is 1.2m. I don't know how well they will work with this lens but someone on here will know. I used some cheap rings (£7) combined with a nifty fifty and got some good results but it's not ideal.

I actually have a nifty fifty.. What are the cheap rings you bought?

Rather than cheap rings look at evil bay for auto tubes about £70.00, this will allow you to retain aperture control from your body.

As dogfish says it is a fully manual affair and if you want to set an aperture you have to use the dof preview button and take the lens off whilst holding the button down. Its a faff!

You can get them from amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/MACRO-EXTENSION-TUBES-CANON-Camera/dp/B001CWZE6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276269651&sr=8-1 and the popular auction site item #180517792440

i can try and post an image i took with it....

The problem with those is the lack of aperture control which results in all your shots being taken wide open so you have virtually no DOF so you just wont use them. i just binned them

Beat me to it !

get the 70-20mm f4 if you can as you'll use that more then a Macro.
