Can anyone help me with some lens advise. Im buying a Canon 5D ii and am unsure which lens to buy.
I am keen to buy a 2.8 that can reach up to 300mm?
2 options i have been considering
a fixed ef 300mm f4 or
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM - and buying an ef 2x extender (does anyone know if there is much difference in Mark ii or mark iii other than price?)

Any advise is appreciated

Might also help if you tell us what it is that you want to shoot.

Your 300mm f/4 you suggested will struggle to achieve f/2.8!

The old 70-200's e.g. the Mk1 lost image quality massively with a 2x TC so id discount that imho. The mk2 however is supposed to be really good with it, and may be even better with the Mk3 TC.

Sigma are about to bring out there 120-300mm f/2.8 OS zoom over the next few months may be worth looking at.

But as neoboy said its all subjective until we know what you want to shoot.

Soz, first post.
I want the lens to suit taking some picts at local football matches and taking some photo's at weddings from the back of the church from balcony.

At the minute it is more of a hobby so dont really want to go mad. Maybe somewhere between 1000 and 2000.

For that budget, you could pick up a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 and have enough for a decent monopod.

I was after a 300 f/4 and ended up with the 70/200 2.8 II, i use it with a 1.4x and am very happy.
Having said that I still like to add the prime to my camera bag.

which version of the 1.4 extender do you have as i believe there are now 3. Thethird being a lot more expensive

thanks Richard, i think there is about £300 difference between Mii and Miii extender.
Do you know if the newer one is any better?
What do you use the lens for ?

you lose aperture on any compatible lens. With a 1.4x it becomes an f/4.0 with a 2x its an f/5.6.

i am not familiar with sigma lenses. do they have Image stabilizer built into any of them?
the 120 to 300 2.8 would have the specs i was thinking of but are the results as good as from canon IS lenses

The new 120-300 was announced a few months back and it will have OS which is Sigma's IS equivalent. Its not hit the shops yet though and i would imagine the price tag will be quite hefty.

Hi Euan,
Do you think i would be better going for the 70-200 2.8 canon IS with a 1.4 extender?
Ive seen this lens for 1400 to 1500 and extender Mark 2 200ish or mark 3 500ish

Id suggest you have a play with them both. The 120-300 is a heavy old lens, the 70-200 Mk2 by all accounts is an amazing lens and handles the extenders very very well. Why not hire them out for a week and see how you like them?
