canon lens adivce

Its an ok lens from what ive seen, I have a Tamron 55-200 LD DII lens and its great for most subjects, havent had a chance to try it out at a trackday yet. Neither have IS so you need to weigh up whether you will need it, if you are shooting on full magnification then it is going to suffer at all but the fastest of shutter speeds.

If you're looking at the Sigma, I'd suggest you go for the APO version - it features better quality optics than the non APO version, and you should be able to pick up a new one for the same price Jessops are doing the non APO version for.

budget i dont know - depends whats good for track days rally's etc

whats IS and whats it do??

Budget telephoto's would be a toss up bettween the Sigma 70-300mm APO and the Canon 55-250 IS personally I think the canon is now the daddy in this market but depending on the race track you may need that extra 50mm on the sigma.

Budget is important. You say need a lens for trackdays / rallying. Questions you need to answer are, how close to the action can you get as that will factor which lens you get.

So will you need a xx-200mm or xx-300mm or xx-400mm lens.
Speed of the lens is also important.
A 70-200mm f2.8 is a faster lens than a 70-200mm f4, less time for light to get to sensor, it also add to the cost of the lens.
For rallying you will probably need a fast lens, especially in the forest stages.

Recommendations

Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS (£350)
Canon 70-200mm f4 (£500)
Sigma 100-300mm f4 (£750)
Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 (£750)
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 (£800)
Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 (£1000)
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS (£1200)
Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 (£1700)

The budget lenses mentioned in the above threads will get you started, but you will have problems with speed of focus and capturing images if the light conditions aren't ideal

dont forget the 300 f2.8 and 400 f4 among others, oh and a nifty fifty for the close up decals when you in the pits:)

you do really need to know what lengths you need to be working at, where do you go for motorsport togging? perhaps a local to the place might be able to advise you

i not had my 450 long but i been to a driving dag for my gf bro

got so so images with the 15-55 lens

but want something to get me started

i not got the £300 to spend on a lens but would look up to £200 to get me started atm.

is there anything 2nd good to get??

umm correct me if i'm wrong but i thought the "fastness" of a lens was due to it having a wider aperture ie. f2.8 instead of f4, not the amount of time it takes to get to the sensor??
not really an issue at the speed of light......
cheers

The aperture doesn't cause light to change speed - its travelling roughly at the speed of light although it will change speed as it passes through different mediums (Scientists have managed to slow light down to 30mph)

A lens at f2.8 passes twice as much light as a lens at f4 so in lower light conditions a lens that will focus at f2.8 will be consistently more accurate than one at f 4 or one at f5.6 as most cameras use differences in contrast to provide autofocus, unless you compare zooms to primes as zooms have a more complicated lens arrangement and is often slower to focus compared to the more prime which is optimised for its focal length.

However an f2.8 lens will be heavier than an f4 lens and more expensive.

Can you point me at a source for that, I find that subject very interesting :geek:

perhaps I have difficulty with sarcasm

On the lens side of things. I have been very impressed with the 75-300 IS lens from Canon. A colleague of mine used the non-IS version (you can probably find some second hand in good knick) at a drag rally and got some amazing shots with it (including some good flames).

Edit: Sorry, that should read 70-300 IS USM. Got confused.

It doesn't seem to get very good reviews.http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

The best you could call that review is damned with faint praise.

I'm never sure how to take these reviews, whether or not I would be as critical as the reviewer, whether I would even notice the difference.

I think this is the lens he meant. The older 75-300 IS USM isn't as good as the current 70-300 IS USM

The current 70-300 IS ,has been described as the hidden L glass ,so there's food for thought

also looking at the canon IS 70-300mm.
reviews seem good and can be had for a good price if you hang around.

i was originally looking at the Sigma 70-300 APO but wanted IS.
there dosnt seem to be anything in between the sigma lens and the canon one also with IS.

if anyone knows of a 300mm zoom with IS that could be had slightly cheaper second hand than the canon one i would love to know about it,

ian

There is also the Canon EFS 55-250 IS, this is a more affordable lens which gives very good results IMO.

Depends if you can make do with it being 50mm shorter.
