Hi everyone. Im going to purchase a canon L lens for my 40D. The ones im looking at are the 24-70mm f/2.8L or maybe the 17-40 f/4.0L. I know all L lenses are made to very good standards but are there any other lenses better value for money wise?

Thanks.

I've just ordered a canon 17-55 f2.8. About a ton cheaper than an L lens (and you dont have the build quality) but the image quality is supposed to be as good (bar a bit of vignetting when wide open at 17mm) so this might be another option you want to consider. I'll let you know what its like when it arrives.

My question would be - what do you intend to shoot with it? That will define the focal length and range you're after. I'm guessing that you're maybe looking to replace the kit lens?

I have the 24-105 L as part of my 5D kit, and it's beautifully sharp, but the largest apertue of f/4 means it's sometimes found wanting indoors.

I have a 17-40 f/4 L on my 40D, great lens. Excellent quality.

Realy wide aswel.

If you may be considering going to a larger frame size, ie 1.3 or full frame, stick with the L's. If not then consider the alternative. I have a 17-85is which I use, and on my 20D image quality matches (in my opinion) my 17-40. But, on my 1dmk11n (same pixel count as 20D) there is a noticeable improvement in image quality. This could be due to the larger pixel, Thats 8.2 on a larger sensor, rather than crammed together on a 1.6 crop.

i use a 17-40 on my 5D and it vignetts a bit.. its too slow too..

I would go with the 24-70 great all round lens and fast. are L lens's better?? I think the build is and the IQ is better on some of the models but at the end of the day it comes down to money, can you justify paying the extra, pros can but if you are only using it for fun and you haven't got money to burn can you??

Looking at your website (some good images there BTW), it seems you have a mixture of interests, therefore a 17-40 F4L maybe just a bit limilting for your needs.

I'd be tempted to go for the 24-105 F4L, will cover most of your bases, has IS which is extremely useful.

If you can afford it, it's worth investing in L glass, they are built like the proverbial outhouse, sweet and sharp, and will outlast a few body changes.

I have the 24-105 L and I find the focal length very useful, the IS is very handy as well.

For me the longer reach and the IS made the 24-105 a better option than the 24-70 even though you loose a stop.

I actually have a 40D with 24-70 setup. For me the extra stop is what swayed my decision and I prefer to "zoom on foot" :)

I have both the 17-40L and the 24-105L and umed and arrred over the 24-70. Basically with a crop sensor the 17-40 is great and for me was about the right focal length (mainly landscapes and candids) The 24-105 is really great too and has the IS which is a bonus, sometimes I find it's not wide enough of a crop camera though.
However on my 1ds I find the 17-40 basically never gets used. My main on camera lenses are the 24-105 and the 50 1.5.
For that reason I think I'd have to recommend the 24-105 to you, has great IQ, is sturdy, well built, has some good reach as a walk around lens and can do landscapes all-be-it not all that wide and will last with you if you take the full frame plunge.
