Hi Guys/Girls,

I've got some money coming in (Army Backpay, finally) and have kept looking at the L Series glass...

I'm primarily looking for an increase in sharpness, clarity and colour, preferably an all round lens over a speciality lens..

I've been looking at the 24-105 f4 L - despite the fact on my 7d it'll return a focal length of c.38-168mm, it does seem a good lens, allowing me to shoot at the wider end, as well as use the extra reach to get motorsport/car shots at the opposite end. It would also allow me to expand and have a decent shot in portraiture.

I currently have an EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS II and an EF 50mm f1.8... Sort of swaying more towards EF lenses, purely to save in the future where at some point i would upgrade to FF. Although the 7D will probably remain with me as a second body... Hence the sort of swaying haha.

So why have i started this thread? Well, i'm after example images of the subjects i've listed, preferably from a 7D and user opinions. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for a similar lens boasting the benefits of L series glass and c.£700 i'm keen for examples and experiences on those also.

Regards,

PS.

I'm not overly fussed on buying brand new, as long as it is in very good condition.

on a cropper - also consider Canon's 17-55 2.8 or the 15-85.

I prominently use a canon 17-55 F2.8 and a 70-200 F4 on my 7D and have no issues. Second hand I'm sure you could get a good 17-55 for 450 quid and a 70-200 for 300 quid. Both lenses will give great quality.

I'm a Canon 5D Mk1 shooter, only recently I've bought a used/mint condition EF 24-105 f/4 L lens, so far I love it, it's actually a beast of a thing, nice and chunky with quality feel.
A good quality/used EF 24-105mm lens will sell for around £400 ish.

Hoping to save for a EF 17-40mm as my next lens.

Having had a 17-55 f2.8 , 24-70 f2.8 L and 24-105 f4 L, I would say get the 17-55 f2.8 it's a fantastic lens, the only reason I had to sell mine is because it would not fit the 1D.

Unless your completely moving from the 7D in the next 12 month the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 is the one to go for IMHO.

Having had a look around and taken your advice - I'm not sure what the draw to L series lenses are anymore.. It seems there are plenty sharp lenses avalanle in the EF and EF-S 'standard' range.

Current shopping list now sits as

70-200
17-55 f2.8

Thanks very much

I haven't used my 24-105 f4 for a while as my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM and Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII cover the focal length. But I took my 'little used' 24-105 f4L and my 5D3 to an all day indoor gig the other week and got some great photos with it. I've put some on my Flickr account and some in Dropbox and 4 of the 5 bands that played have been in touch to say how good the pics are. One of the groups has asked if they can use some of them for promo work and maybe use them for an album cover or booklet. Rather pleased with myself TBH.

So taking all this into account I really fallen in love with my 24-105 again and I'm taking it along to a wedding I'm shooting to see what it can do there. I know it's too slow for the indoor shots but the outdoor shots should be OK. I'm still taking my 24-70 f2.8 and a 17-40 f4L just in case 24 isn't quite wide enough but I'm hoping to get a lot more use from my 24-105 again. It's very sharp and goes well with my 5D3 but I've also used it quite a lot on a 7D, when I first got one, and it's a great allround walkabout lens on the 7D.

I got the 24-105 in the end! I was recently out in the Canadian Rockies horse trekking for a week. Took the 7D and new glass.... Outstanding! Some man maths has kicked in and in two months either a 6D or a 5D 3 will join my 7D.

A little difficult to decide between the two, but I'm sure ill get there!

Thanks guys and girls for the assist with the lush glass.

You will be equally surprised at how much better that lens preforms on a 6D. :D

Not necessarily - I had the 17-55 and switched to the 24-70.

The 17-55 is a good lens with great optics, constant f/2.8 and IS but it's far from perfect. The build quality is lacking, it's a dust magnet (if that bothers you) and it's not weather sealed. Granted these things may not bother you but the point I'm making is that there are plenty of reasons for preferring the 24-70 or 24-105 over the 17-55 even on a crop.
