Ok not sure if anyones interested in this (or if its in the right section), just got my Canon L 400mm f5.6 prime, following the talk for the 70-200mm f2.8 and IQ loss at 400mm with the 2xtc i decided to test them both out here.

I I choise the 70-200mm and tc option over the 100-400mm as i was after the 400mm prime to, as in my opinion from the test shots i did the 70-200mm kills the 100-400mm at 200mm, and better at 280mm but did suffer slightly at 400mm when viewed at 100% crops, but didnt really show up in resized pics.

So how does the 70-200mm f2.8 compare to the 400mm prime. To find out i done the same test as i did to evaluate the 70-200mm f2.8 and the 100-400mm

The test took 2 test pics of the same subject using the same focus point, i even cheated with the 70-200mm by using the IS which the 400 dosnt have.

Setting for both where

Shutter 1/250
fstop max f/5.6
ISO 100
400mm
With on builtin flash

First up the 70-200mm f2.8

Not bad? but as you can see the 400mm is brighter, lets see them closer.

As you see here the 400mm prime is much sharper out the box, so the final PP results are much much better. I took a few oother outdoor shots and again the 400mm was much much faster, and brighter every tiime, and pulled far more detail from the shadows.

Time to add a 300mm L and the 500mm Sigma then i think i'll have all the lenses i could possible want lol Hope a few found this helpfully or interesting.

Thanks for sharing that  It's impressive just how much sharper the 400 mm prime is :)

TFS The 400mm certaily looks good from here
But I dare not
Concidering its a prime I don't think the 70-200 + x2 TC came out too bad either

Yeah its brill, i tested all three lenses original, couldnt afford them all at once, Seeing the results again i am sure i went the right way, shall see at the weekend and then evaluate the 300mm prime. See how it works at 600mm, then think if it worth keeping the 2x tc.
