Ok im struggling with my 2nd camera 1dmk3 on a 70-200 2.8
Seems not to want to focus on moving objects well enough ie. at football. Images are very soft and unusable.
And as im new to shooting with canon was wondering what custom functions you guys are using.
Tryed to copy the settings from my 1dmkIV but still isnt right.
Is there anything that im missing or can do to help/solve this ( dont fancy sending my gear off to canon for calibrating)

Cheers in advance!

Might be an idea to put up some sample shots you're unhappy with but it is worth mentioning it's never going to be as good as the 1D MkIV

Cant really post with Data co etc and i only really use it for league footy.
The mk4 is obviously the superior camera, but this camera is way off what it should be doing.

got to agree some of mine are spot on and others are not, using the same set up as you mk3 on the 70-200 mk4 on the 400
if you are not happy why dont you put the mk4 on the zoom for say a game or two and see how that goes

Yeah had a swap over on saturday, the mk4 is brilliant on both lenses.
The mk3 is poor on both!

Chris, maybe you bought one of the many, many MKIII's with the dodgy AF, worth checking the serial number against the affected range

I could point both my mkIIIs at a static subject.. do a burst and only one be in focus... couldnt wait to get rid when new cameras came out... Sorry mate not much help other than to confirm the mkIII are a crock.. worse cameras I ever owned :(

ok, gonna have to dip into the credit card again and find another mkIV.
Im sending Gordon some shots with it to get a second opinion, pretty sure what the outcome will be.

It's a free repair at Canon

Free or not, they never 100% fixed the duff ones, i had 3 of the nasty things before switching to Nikon, if you recently bought it Chris my only advice would be to try get your money back even if the seller says its had the fix, its a lump of ***** and the seller has probably knowingly sold you a duffer

If you have to keep it then then burn it or it'll cost you more in the long run than you paid for it

Send it back mate, Matt should know the issues surrounding the MKIII, is it safe to assume youve raised the issues with Matt over the 3 week youve owned it, its under a 6 month warranty, if he wont refund ask him for a replacement with one outside the effected range, DO NOT BE FOBBED OFF with any response regarding "its been in for the sub mirror" fix or the other recall fixes, even the supposed fixed ones didnt work correctly after said fixes, owners just put up with it when they should have been banging on doors.

As far as i can see, you been knowingly sold a duffer and im sure there are many more who will agree

Well I had a 1DIII, serial No was outside the fix and never ever had any focus issues and I know a few folk that bought early bodies, had the fix and are quite happy with them.

All those outside the effected range were fine

Not all of those within the affected range had the problem, just the majority.

Still the biggest crock of crap Canon ever made, they should have left the AF system alone after the MKIIN which got it bang on

Theres somethink like 180,000 different AF combinations with the MKIV and 1DX, the Nikon D3S has about 30 and gets it bang on.

I had a couple of these Chris (kept one of them) both had had the fix done, the one I kept was spot on the other one was never right, same as Tony focus could be all over the place taking shots of a static subject.

I'd agree with what Gary said, try & return it & put the dosh toward another camera.

Luck,

Stew.

Return it if you can and get a 5d mk 3 :-)
