I've been after a smallish camera for taking to festivals and open air gigs. After taking my PowerShot G16 to a Madness concert in Lincoln recently I was totally underwhelmed by the results. I didn't have the best spot in the crowd but even with the 5x zoom on the G16 the band members still looked like ants and no real detail could be seen. So after thinking for a while I decided on the G3X with it's 25x zoom and a decent set of features . I realise it's not the greatest camera in the world but after just going for a walk in the local park with it, the first time I've really used it out of the house, I've got to say I'm impressed by it. It's easy to handle and fairly easy to use it, one or two things will need a look through the manual to nail the use of various buttons, but on the whole I'm pleased with it and can't wait to try it out in the use it was bought for. Here's a few samples out of the shots I got today.

Glad to hear you are pleased with it. This is one camera I am considering buying, going to follow this thread with some interest.
 
I wouldn't complain about any of those shots.

The one thing that would stop me buying that camera is the lack of a viewfinder.

I've just received the EVF-DC1 to go with the camera. It attaches to the hot shoe so the camera can be used as usual. I shall be trying it out later today and will update later.
 
This is the one for me, had the fz1000, a good camera it is but I hated the OTT menu, the hollow plastic body and it was like carrying a dslr. 600mm touch screen and smaller has won me over. Pity the evf is extra but then you'll never get everything you'd like whichever camera you go for
 
I bought mine from DigitalRev (it was £619 but now down to £559) and got very good service too, I also found the eyepiece on ebay for £125 brand new, it was split from a kit of another camera, so I actually paid less for the full kit than I would if I'd bought just the camera from the UK (including all the duty paid for the import). I'm really surprised how good the eyepiece is when attached. I've used it for quite a lot of wildlife and macro shots and it makes it much easier than using the rear screen, specially in bright sunlight, although the screen is pretty good overall. It keeps up with most of the situations I shoot but it is a bit slow with birds in flight although it does capture some good shots when the eyepiece view isn't perfect.

All in all I'm really thrilled with the camera, I got it mostly for going to gig where I couldn't take a dslr, but I've used it at a couple of weddings for the night do's, I took it with me when I went to the coast for the day recently instead of taking a dslr and it goes just about everywhere I go. I'd give it a good 9 out of 10 overall and would recommend it to anyone wanting a smallish, go anywhere camera. The colours in the photos on the preset settings are nice and vibrant and depending on how it's set up it works really well in 99% of shooting situations. I've not used it a lot for videos yet and only used the preset settings when I have but I'm pretty impressed with that too. Looking forward to using this camera more and more, it wont make me sell any of my dslr's but it makes a damn good backup for them.

Just ordered the evf (new) £108 from Japan if there's any duties it will only be £20 so still far cheaper than buying from here, I'm afraid I won't be using UK retailers everything is far cheaper elsewhere seen the camera for £500, just waiting on the sale of my d700

Did you get any duties buying from DigitalRev? I thought they'd stopped being able to send without import charges, I'd rather buy from them I know they're reliable.

I ended up with a bill recently for around £20. I don't know what DR's policy about refunding etc. as I haven't been in contact with them yet but as soon as I find out I'll update the post.

I asked them myself and they said:

Thanks for taking the time to find out about the refund Pete. I will get round to paying my invoice at the end of the month and send them the receipt. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of the camera as I have, I've got a bunch of dslr's and lenses at home but I always take the G3X with me wherever I go for comfort and ease. I'm sure you'll love it.
 
That's exactly why I want it, I can't lug the dslr everywhere, especially with heavy lenses, but this I can. It will no doubt get used the most.
just email a copy of your invoice, that's all they need.
 
Is there a cheaper lens hood you can get other than the Canon one? I might have one that will fit but if not.....
 
Received from DigitalRev today and the viewfinder from Japan, very impressed, for me the viewfinder a must
It works a treat :-) definitely the best bridge camera on the market imo.
