Yes
Well no, it probably isn't but having been looking at spending upto approx £600 on a new camera/system I'd pretty much decided on a Panasonic FZ1000 (or a Pentax K50 with a nice Samyang prime but nevermind that for now) without even hearing of the G3X. All of the reviews of the FZ1000 compared it to the Sony RX 10 mk 3 or whatever it is but that's way over my budget and it was only some random review somewhere which mentioned the G3X. On the surface it seems a good alternative, slightly slower thoughout the range upto 400mm but has an extra 200mm of reach which would be useful. Other pros include better weatherproofing, smaller size and a touchscreen whilst the FZ has a proper viewfinder and a full tilt/swivel screen so I could be persuaded either way and might be edging towards the Canon.

Pricewise they seem to be much the same so why is the G3X practically invisible? Is it actually a bit of a dog that nobody likes to talk about, is it about to be discontinued or have I just been looking in the wrong places?!

When I tried a g3x, I loved the body style, but the zoom was slow, af was slow as was most of its operation, and I couldn't hand hold it very well at full zoom. It just didn't grab me at all. Fz1000 would be my choice out of those 2, just better in af, zooming and overall speed. and a very nice camera to use when I had the chance to have a play with one.
