I'm also interested in the new Canon G1 X as a replacement for my quite tired G9.
I need to see if the reviews match the hype.

It's very slow - both the lens and the lame 1.9 frames per second continuous shooting speed (vs 10 fps on the Fuji) That may not be limiting to you or the OP, but it's very limiting to some and is worth mentioning. The G1X 'may' be limiting on size too, if you want to carry it in your pocket at times. I think it lacks the sweep panorama mode of some of it's competitors. You may not need that, but it is fun to have, and I would expect it on a camera of that price point. I also seem to recall that the G1X viewfinder is only 77% coverage which may bother some people. The macro mode is not great.

Whilst the image quality is very good from the pre-release model I saw, the above may or may not (only you know the answer to that) limit you in some situations. I know that it would limit me, hence my choice of the Fuji, despite being a long term dedicated Canon studio my choices for compact cameras are more pragmatic.

Edit: I forgot to add that the Fuji has great colours straight out of the box.

28mm @ f/2.8 with a large sensor is actually an attractive combination for my landscape and street photography. Usually I carry a 5D and a 24-105 F4L or 50mm 1.4 and that suits me fine most of the time, the only drawback to that is weight which up to this point had meant I carry the G12. I'm going to personally plan to use the G1 X now as it's not much bigger than the G12, much better image quality with same pixel size as APS-C DSLR and it's discreet which suits what I want to shoot.

The sensor is more than 4 x bigger that the sensor in the Fuji X10 so that surely has to be an advantage.

Only if your purchasing decisions are entirely ruled by sensor size - and the G1X does have a great sensor. There are many other important considerations to take into account - which ruled out the G1X for me as a 'go everywhere' camera - it wouldn't fit in a jacket pocked. The sensor in the G1X is capable of good noise control - but the DR is a little less than the Fuji and the colours this Canon produces aren't as vibrant.

Just weigh up what your real priorities are and go from there. Excellent noise control: G1X Size, colour and looks: Fuji

Since my G11 took a bath, I'm thinking of buying a high end compact in August for my holidays in September. Both the G1X and the X10 are on my list. Not bothered by the FPS but the 'white orb' of the X10 concerns me, as does the focus distance of the G1X. I will wait for them to appear in the shops for me to play around with. IQ of the G1X looks stunning, and I'm sure the colours will be tweakable by setting up a custom colours setting or shooting in RAW and tweeking in LR.

There are a lot of pictures in the Fuji thread here and on the wider net and it's not hard to find examples of the orb issue.

I don't think the orb issue would be a big issue for me as I don't belive that it detracts much (if at all) from the images, but, we all have to make our own mind up.

Loved the spec of the G1 X, and was set on getting one, but having a look at the X10, it does look a nice, well specced piece of kit.

Maybe just buy both?! :-D

Must admit I'm tempted or might be when the price levels out a bit, i.e. goes down. I managed to 'delete' my G9 last year and the replacement G12 is in a different world quality wise. Compatible in many instances with my 40D and a match for the Panasonic G1 I was loaned for a couple of months. Tempting as I always carry a camera but hate to have to screw accessories on such as lenses or viewfinders.

It does look a well specified camera and is very tempting on paper........ but the suggest price put me of as it would be a compact camera solution.

As the X10 has come down in price, may be driven by peoples fear of the Orbs, I got one of them. No orb issues to report, great to use and IMO it oozes style to boot.

Would love to have a play with one though.

G12.... Compatible in many instances with my 40D and a match for the Panasonic G1 I was loaned for a couple of months.

I'm surprised at that. I've only had a brief go with a G12 but I found it's quality more like my LX5 than G1. I found the G1 much better, more so at higher ISO where I found it no longer a contest TBH. Looking at higher ISO I'd say that the G1 is more than a stop better and as the G1 probably trails an APS-C by maybe a stop, possibly a little less, I'd put the G12 maybe a certain 1 and very possibly 2 stops behind a DSLR. I also found that G1 shots stood up much better to processing. G1 also has a much better EFV than the G12 VF IMVHO.

Panamoz mate. £509 plus £10 for postage & £12 for warranty. Many people seem wary of them but they've always been fine for me. I'll let you know Monday when it arrives. Its just too big a saving for me to miss!

And i have to be honest i have fallen for this camera hook line and sinker... :D

Mine arrived today
very nice, I'm a happy bunny
My only gripe would be and its minor, nothing to with the camera itself
No hard copy user manual, its on disk :annoyed:
No problem, have downloaded it to the iPad as a .pdf ... sorted

Good news Tony, looking forward to the pictures! Not sure when ours will arrive but my assistant will be using it far more than me as I am something of a fashion victim and love the look of the Fuji around my neck ... in its Gariz leather half case .... ooh the nostalgia.

Did it come with a case?

I ask because WEX have 2 cases listed for the G1X.

The one they recommend is the SC-DC75 which is a mere £99.99!!

But they also offer the DCC-1800 at a much more reasonable £59.99!

They have got to be kidding! £100 for a small case no bigger than the camera when you can get a decent midsize Lowepro backpack for about 40% less!

Neil
G10 does not come with a case
and the DCC1800 is the case to go for, I think the other one is leather,
or should be for that price, having said that they state the DCC1800 is a soft LEATHER case ??
I've seen the DCC1800 for I think it was about £49 ish some where, will confirm

Thanks for that, however the DCC1800 is still just marginly less than a Lowepro backpack so still seems like a lot of money. However a snug fitting case is what's needed as with no case the camera will eventually get scuffed and scraped (something I hate).

Why go we get ripped off? For one reason, the same reason we do with petrol. It's certainly not the dealers making a fortune! Also the US population/market is slightly bigger than the US's. As you'd expect, the more you buy the bigger the discount. Currency will have a lot to do with it I'm sure?

Mines just arrived... cant wait to get home tonight and have a play :)

Well,

My G1X arrived yesterday from the lovely people at Panamoz :)

Have to say im very, very impressed so far by my first impressions. But then im not a professional and just enjoy taking photos, and occasionally getting a good one!

Build quality feels good, not too heavy or bulky (my lass finds it fine). Comfortable to hold and use. Dials are all fine and accessible.

So far taken indoor (peeing down here last night) pics of various things and also my 8 month old child - which the camera managed to focus on with no real problems - dunno whether its my lack of knowledge/experience about fast focus on high end DSLR's, but i just dont see why the camera is getting so pillored for its sluggishness so far?

Surely if it can pick out a child in a bouncer with no problems then thats acceptable for most situations that this camera would be used for? Anyway it appears more than fine to this untrained eye, though please feel free to ridicule me if im wrong :)

It appears to take some pretty damned good pics - but its only first impressions from last nights play, so its early days and i havent played about anywhere near enough with it yet! Though my lass disagreed heavily last night about that - apparently coming in and playng with the camera for 3 hours was out of order :D

Can understand the problem about poor macro mode, but then i knew from the start that it wasnt capable of it, and i've only ever taken photos like that with the relevent lens! So i guess i would just have to buy the relevent filter ring and macro filter lens that someones has already posted some shots with somewhere - think it was on here somewhere?

So from a budding/bumbling amateurs point of view, the camera appears to do everything i thought it would do..... and it only cost me £509 rather than the £699 the robbing gits over here in England are trying to charge me.

And if i manage to get a decent pic i may even be brave enough to post it on here... then again i doubt it :D

Thanks for posting Chris. A few pics would be nice to see though, perhaps once you get outside with it.

This camera really interests me. I have a 7D with 3 lenses and an S95 but would like something inbetween, with very good IQ, for those times when I don't want to lug the 7D and lenses around with me. Of course the S95 could fill that role but TBH I find the size too small for anything other than the occassional shot or for when I want to take a camera when I'm out at night.
