Canon G11

Anyone got one? I have been comparing it with the Lumix GF1 and the Leica D-LUX 4 and i must say it blows the Lumix out the water and is as good, if not a little better than the Leica!! I would love the Leica but the Canon just has that much more flexibility.

Question for you: Does the G11 save Raw files in the normal .CR2 format?

If it does it will be a dodle to pop them in lightroom! Wahey!

Thanks Chaz

I did go to that site but must have missed that page!!

Interested that you say it blows the Lumix out of the water - I bought both in the knowledge I would only keep one and plumped for the GF-1.

I felt the Panasonic won it for me overall but did really like the G11 - what was it swung it for you?

Already answered but also worth mentioning is that you can work on the G11 raw files in Canon's DPP as well, which you can't with the G9's raw files.

The G9 is two years old and its the G11 that was asked about not sure what your point is?

I go by image comparison on Flickr and other websites and the GF1 although very very good, the G11 is just stunning!

I have compared the Leica D-Lux 4 and the images i have seen are very very good in most cases but not as good as the G11 The G11 is consistently good.

Trouble with the Leica is that the really good on Flickr etc shots are better than the G11 and they have a certain 'feel' to them. Trouble with Leica is that i would need to process the Raw file in the supplied software 1st then save to either tiff, DNG or Jpeg for post processing in Lightroom :(.

Thanks Andy

Having had both cameras and comparing the RAW files I just felt the GF-1 was far better in terms of the amount of details the sensor captured and the high ISO performance

That said the G11 is a remarkable camera and Canon should be commended on producing it with the focus on reduced pixels to improve image quality and dynamic range.

If I had the choice (and the money!) I would have kept both cameras but sadly one had to go and it was the G11 - probably not because it was the worse of the two but because the GF-1 more suited me

If you bought one I think you would be very happy

I wouldn't be so hasty my friend.

The G11 is a compact with a tiny compact sensor. One of the larger ones granted but still a compact sensor with all it's drawbacks. The GF1 is not. It has a four thirds sensor and will give you all the creative flexabilty (mainly DOF choice) of an SLR.

The Leica D-LUX 4 is technically Identical to the Panasonic Lumix LX3 which has a much cheaper price tag. The only difference is cosmetic and the badge. Both are still only compacts though.

Given the choice I would go for the GF1 everytime.

What about the raw files on the GF1? How do you process them? I have lightroom which can handle bothe Cannons CR2 files and Leicas RWL files no problem. So with the GF1, whats your workflow?

I sold my G9 recently as the noise levels and inability to cope with low light situations were annoying to me.
I've ordered a G11 though and hope to have it this coming week. From what I've seen on the net I'm impressed.

Adobe camera RAW is used by both photoshop and lightwave. It is regulary updated to cater for new cameras. The latest update (download for free) caters for the GF1:

You just install it and and voila lightwave now has support :)
