Looking for a compact That I can keep with me when I dont want to take my SLR. Reviews are far from clear, and price wise there is little to choose.

So which one of these 2 or are there alternatives? Optical viewfinder is a must as I wear reading glasses and using the lcd screen is a pain!

I think the G11 over price for what it is have ago at using this, my bring up a load more options like Panasonic TZ7

Have a look at the canon S90, has same sensor as G11, but about £100/150 cheaper, has had some great reviews, although no view finder, has a massive LCD screen

S90 doesn't do RAW does it?

G11 is a step up from the G10 in the noise department and higher ISO settings. Only you can tell if it is worth the extra over the G10. I have a G10, love it to bits, solid construction, very nice results, but limited ISO - I have to stick to within 20. At 80 or 100 it is fabulous, at 200 usable but by 400 it is getting marginal for me. 28mm lens is useful and the long end at 140 is not that long, but fine for portraits etc. Zoom does go in biggish jumps.

S90 does RAW, no hot shoe for flash or view finder, but manual, same sensor as G11, just its smaller brother

From what iv'e seen its not exactly a viewfinder, more like a hole with some glass either side
I have a Canon compact and the viewfinder is useless

, I also have the G10 but borrowed a G11 recently. I didnt miss the extra pixels & printed the image A3+, I also took images in a night club of my son DJing the noise reduction over the G10 is worth going for the G11. My G10 iages where useless the G10 worked well

If there is no price difference go for the G11 - the G10 is effectively 'obsolete' now.

(The G11 will be as obsolete in 18 months, or less, too)

Dave, any chance you could take a look at the Panasonic GF1 with viewfinder?

More expensive than a quality "compact" but you might like the results a little more.

Thanks, had a look but its a shed load of money for a compact. Like DSLRs its a confusing choice, so might just stick with my D60 and std lens for the time being, just keeping that in the car. (D90 kept for more serious expeditions!)

Then again I might give up on the viewfinder, put my glasses on and go for one of the better Fujis!

Yes, they are more expensive, probably half as much again as a G11, but the quality....:)

I'm very pleased with my GF1. ;)

I would recommend that you try any camera taking the sort of pictures you wish to take before you decide which is best for you. I have a Canon G9 which I frankly hate using. Why? Well, while it can take great pictures, I find it so slow to operate that I keep missing the picture I want to take. Both the auto focus and the zoom need to have had a massive speed boost before I would consider a G11 (or any other small sensor compact for that matter).

Since joining this forum I am thinking of buying the panasonic GF1 to use instead of a Nikon D70 (fitted with a 50mm f1.8) because it can be fitted with a fast lens and is rumoured to focus and shoot at near SLR speeds.

just my two pennies...

Simon
