Canon G10 Exposure Compensation Dial

Hi guys,
I recently got my first digital camera so please be patient with me!
The exposure compensation dial on my G10 doesn't seem to do anything when the camera is set to 'manual' mode, but in the Aperture and Shutter Speed priority modes it works as expected.
When set to manual I get a little exposure compensation dial animated on the right site of my screen, which tells me when i make changes to the physical dial by moving a little green marker around. However, a little red marker seems to automatically set the exposure comp for me, which is rather annoying. How can I change this?

I'm not familiar with the G10, so I'm not sure what you mean by the little red and green markers, but you don't need exposure compensation in manual mode!

In aperture mode, you select and aperture, it selects the shutter speed, to achieve a certain brightness, and vice versa with Shutter Priority. If the camera is getting it's choice wrong, you then adjust it with the exposure control...

In manual however, you affect the exposure completely with the aperture and shutter speed, if it's too dark, increase the aperture or decrease shutter speed! Because the camera isn't choosing the settings for you, you can't adjust them in the same way. I hope this makes sense, sorry it's a bit rambley!

Oh I see what you mean. I misunderstood the principle of the exposure compensation completely - I assumed it was a digital tweak to the image rather than an optical one. Thanks for your well written and quick response!
