Would you say trading in my Canon 60D for a Sony A7R (1st gen) would be an improvement?

I'm thinking of going full frame for indoor car shows. Possibly paired with 50mm F1.8. I'm currently using a canon 60D with a 10-20mm sigma which is F3/4 and its not great for indoor use.

Only concern is I have a 70-200 Canon L lens (I pressume I can get an adapter for it on a Sony?)

Yes it will be a big improvement, although I believe the A7 (not the R) is better in low light.

Sigma do an adaptor for the Canon lenses to fit Sony.

Why not try a 1.8 prime on your canon first, it's only like 60-80 quid anyway. Worth a try before switching.
 
Canon 6D Mk1 s/h is a bit of a steal at the moment, excellent in low light (High ISO), pair with the 24mm F2.8 or an Tamron 24-70 F2.8 (also a steal at the moment s/h), you 70-200 will still work, as will any other Canon EF lenses that you have (not E-FS)
 
I would need a replacement for my 70-200mm canon lens and looking at Sony lenses they do seem very expensive (for a hobbyist). Other companies don't seem to do many lenses to fit Canon like sigma/tamron etc

As mentioned above I could try a 1.8 as the 1.8 on my phone works very well but its just 50mm on a crop sensor for indoor car shows might be extremely tight :confused:

Will definitely work out a lot cheaper trying to get a decent indoor lens rather than swapping the whole camera/lens manufacturer

Sigma 18-35 F1.8 an option - around £400-£450 used - very sharp
 
It’s around 38mm I think on a crop. How about a 17-40?

The Tamron 70-180mm for Sony seems to be getting a lot of interest. It might be worth looking into.
 
I think for what you’ll lose at the wide end you’ll make up for not having to carry around, and swap out, extra lenses in a busy show hall.
 
I had the 5dii with 24-105 and 70-200 until last year, and traded for A7iii and two similar lenses.
Your Canon lens will still make decent money and adapters aren't ideal
Don't regret it at all but the new Canon Mirrorless are tempting however still need need updated lenses.
My main reason was far more practical to use for video as well as still, but the low light performance and overall resolution is in another league - unsurprising after ten years.
 
I had the canon 6D & in low light it was very good.
 
I think the 70-200L is a keeper,i regreted selling mine while i still had the 6D.
 
The hard part is knowing where to draw the line with being a hobbyist even if my instagram account does seem to be taking off and it would be good to invest in some better equipment. 6D body with a lens to replace my 18-50mm f2.8 sigma and we are looking at nearly £1000
 
I know it's not full frame but the 80d was a leap in image quality and you would not need to change lenses. I am a full time pro and over the last 6 months I have moved form Canon 1dx and 5DMK4 to a Sony A7iii and A9. A couple of things to note the image quality has not blown me away. I am not saying the Sony is worse than the canon just not really any better in the real world. I am sure there are people who will point to bench tests where they zoom in to the left eye lash of the model. I am talking from a working professionals point of view and printing out photographs. The eye focus on the sony is amazing but if you are going for an older model is it the same? Over the last 17 years I have been shooting digital i have shot can and it has had to be canon lenses daily L's. This has now charge with third party manufactures stepping up to the plate. I have the tiny Samyang 18mm f2.8. feels like a toy but shoots like a pro and only £259. I also have the Tamron 28-75f2.8 which is as sharp as my old 24-70f2.8 mkII but a third of the price. If you are looking at older full frame cameras the 5DMK3 would be good and there are lots on the market second hand, just watch out for shutter count.

I did wonder if it was worth upgrading my sigma 18-50 2.8 to the canon L glass but for me especially being a hobbyist as well it isn't worth it.

I feel, looking at my previous photos as well a lot of indoor car shows I am shooting between 10-20mm (using my 10-20mm sigma) so I feel im stuck with that lens but being f4-5.6 its not ideal indoors. If I went full frame I feel I could use 20mm - 30mm lenses with a lower aperture than f4/-5.6. I would be looking at just under £1000 and increase in image quality it probably isn't worth it for myself.

I have the original A7 which only has face detect but even that plus the ability for focus anywhere in the frame are real game changers for me over a DSLR as you can effectively forget about focus and concentrate on composition and capturing the moment anywhere in the frame. For non people shots the ability to focus accurately and consistently anywhere in the frame (with no MF faff on, no front /back focusing to worry about) are still great advantages and then of course you get the in evf tools such as seeing the DoF and exposure and the histogram etc and even the getting on a bit now A7 files can take a lot of processing. Do Canon still have the noise issue when boosting shadows?

To be brand agnostic for a moment, the advantages offered by a Sony mirrorless will be very largely present in other marques too.
