Ok, unfortunately I cannot afford a mark III or even a II but may be able to stretch to a I!

I assume that as most of my pics are of sport that end up on websites the 5megs pic size wont bother me and the fast shooting speed is a real bonus.

Question is - are they worth the money? and are they robust enough to cope with being bashed around by my dog and living in a sandy/ dusty environment for six months? Also how does the quality stand up considering the time elapsed?

Anything else I should consider for around the same price - would really like the high fps though.

Thanks,
Chris

Wouldn't this kind of canon be a little more suitable?

Seriously though, what a fantastic photo op, six months in Iraq....stay safe.

How much do 1D MKIs go for?

The 1D series is built to take whatever you can throw at it really, weather sealed and can withstand dusty, dirty environments. Just make sure you use it with a weather sealed lens. What kit do you have / what kit were you planning on using with it?

And oooh Iraq, i'd be pretty nervous about going there for 6 months. I'd really like to be a wartime photographer, perhaps one day :D

 love it - but its ok, I have a great big mean dog!

The 1d is robust and is a fantastic camera... i can tell a 1d sports pic as soon as its posted.. the colours are magnificent..

However the 1d has one major problem... sucks the life out of batteries at an alarming rate..

Have a 400d sigma 28 - 70 f2.8 and the 70 - 200 f2.8 with a 430 ex flash.

Thinking on similar lines - not sure how much time I'm gonna get but we'll see. I am anticipating getting plenty of practice converting to B&W!

Chris

The original 1D is an amazing camera (I still miss mine & I'm a darksider )
I'd very highly recommend one - just make sure to shoot correctly so as you don't have to crop too much & you'll be fine

Arkady is the man to tell you about cameas and the desert, he's a Nikon user but he's probably seen a few Canons floating about there.

I still use my 1D and believe that it's a better buy than either a 450 or 40D. It does eat batteries, hasn't got the ability to crop like a 5D and if you under expose at high ISOs, it will get noisy. Excluding that, it's weather sealed, has lovely handling and 1 series AF and metering. So your keeper rate will almost certainly improve.

Ref the sealing, I used mine at Niagara last year with a 17-40 (also weather sealed). Got soaked and happily shrugged it off.

Why are you going there?
How did you come to the thought of going there?
Tell us more, I would be really interested, and im sure others would.
Thanks,
Adam

Taking one of Her Majesty's Dogs for plenty of walks and sniffing about?

One of Melton Mowbray's lesser-known exports.

For its weather seals its a better bet than your 400d - it might be getting on a bit bit it was THE kit for the sports togs. At 5Mp its not going to highlight any issues with your lenses either.

Go for it - a thoroughly nice piece of kit to handle.

Without saying too much - Going with work, I am in the Air Force. I am a dog trainer so me and the big bad pooch are gonna sort out all the troubles and be back in time for Xmas! (I wish!)

Chris

You remember to tell pooch, "no fraternising with the native totty!" :)

the 1d should work well for you (i did have 2) buy some cheap batteries from herehttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2X-Battery-Pack-for-Canon-NP-E3-EOS-1D-1Ds-Mark-II-N_W0QQitemZ280231051096QQihZ018QQcategoryZ43434QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
these cameras eat batteries and are poor at above 800iso, but are hard as nails (i have dropped 2 without problems) have very fast focus and the shutter will fire really soon after to press the button.
they are well sealed for the elements, and will do their job day after day.

if you expose correctly and fill the frame you can print at 16 x12 without problem, and create really nice printed images - far better then you would expect from 4Mp - i would take a 1dmk1 4Mp over a 8Mp 20d(owned one) 30d any day of the week

good luck and stay safe

Seams this could be the way to go - I kinda figure that this type of "war" photography and sports photography will be similar in their requirements of fast focusing, robustness etc so at least it wont be wasted when (if) I get back!

Anything in particular I should look out for with them?

Chris

Chris
