Hello this is my first post. I'm a novice to photography with an Sony A300 but my father is much more advanced and has a Canon 40d. I was wanting to buy him a flashgun and would love some advice. I have between £100-200 as a budget. Many thanks.

Welcome John,

I have a 430ex2 and it's a great flashgun. However...if I was to buy again it would be a nissin 866 ( think that's the model number) .

I would get one that does high speed sync - I use it all the time for fill-flash outdoors

The Canon 430 has it, so does the big Nissin and top of the range Sigma. Metz 50 AF-1 looks good too. If cash is tight, the little Canon 270EX often gets overlooked. I got one recently and it's far more powerful than you might think (because of the way guide numbers are quoted) and does most things (apart from rotate) including HSS, for under a ton.

430exii I doubt you will get a new one for £100-£150 but would get a very good second hand one, failing that a new one us about £190

I was going for the 270 but went for the 430 and glad I did. Much more versatile.

i had a sigma 530 dg st and it only cost me £140 from new. it was a great piece of kit had similar specs to the canon 430, they still make the sigma 530 super and its well worth a look :)
