Yes
I have been asked by a friend who has a 400D for some advice and as a Nikon guy I wasn't sure.

Will a 400D trigger a 430EX remotely using infra red?

Is that a decent entry level flash?

You could also use an extension lead if you dont want to get a lot of seperation (coiled sort) or go for a straight one for more sepertion. You also maintain direct link/control via a cable.
I think a second hand 550Ex will do the trick as well.

Yes cheap cheerful and do what they say on the tin. For occassional use I wouldn't spend my cash on the frankly overpriced canon option.

The cheapest reliable solution I know of for off camera flash is the RF-602 triggers, available on eBay and from FlashInThePan. In my experience their performance is rock solid, but there is no ETTL facility with them. I have two triggers and five receivers. They can perform double duty as remote wireless shutter releases too, so long as you have the right accessory cable for your camera model.

There are some triggers on eBay - notably Cactus V2 triggers, if you can still get them - that I would not recommend. I have some and they are a waste of time and money, at least with my Canon gear.

Thanks Tim, I'll suggest they buy the 430EX and be a good mate and let them have the RF-602s that I no longer use since moving on to pocket wizards.
