Hey Guys,

I have a small budget of £150 to spend on a telephoto lens within the next few weeks (when I get paid my wages). I am looking at the following:

Canon 50-250mm
Canon 75-300mm
Sigma 70-300mm
Tamron 70-300mm

All of the above 4 are available on Amazon for under £150.

Which out the 4 would be best, or are there any alternatives? I don't mind second hand.

I will be mainly photographing wildlife (garden birds etc) and some sport (horse racing mainly).

Many Thanks!

Rob

The Canon 55-250 is easily the best lens from that list. It puts more expensive lenses to shame. The Canon 75-300 is no where near as good.

The canon 55-250 IS is one of, if not the best bang for buck lens canon make.

You should be able to get the Canon 55-250mm IS for £150 which is a great lens for the money. Probably only beaten by the Nifty Fifty in the value for money stakes!

Totally agree !!

I think this is a runaway success! Can anyone out of interest think of a reason why one of the others would be better just to balance it out a bit?

If not the 55-250mm IS it is :)

Many Thanks!

try the Sigma 18-200mm good range and sharp as well picked one up for a project i am running for £130.00 secondhand

55-250 would be my choice, but if your not in a rush might be worth saving up some and get the Canon 70-300 IS USM, that is a fantastic lens and not too expensive

My Sigma is not the sharpest lens but can produce decent results. However I'd go with the 55-250 IS now given choice based on reviews. I've been borrowing my Sigma off a mate.

The one thing Sigma is better at than Canon, other than the range, is close focusing capability. While not true macro, it can be pretty useful.

If you can get the apo version of the sigma for that price then its worth a look, can be a little soft wide open at 300 but stop down a little it does improve, the close focus is great for dragonflies and the like. I have never used the 55-250 but the results I see do seem very good indeed.

I had the canon 75-300 and have now got the 55-250, seems like such a sharper image to me plus the IS is a major benefit.

A quick thought, I will be shooting wildlife - will the extra 50mm on the sigma say make much difference on reach opposed to the canon? (sigma 70-300mm/canon 55-250mm)

55-250 gets my vote.
