I am looking to buy a 50mm f1.4 lens to use on my Canon 5d. The choice is between Canon and Sigma. I've heard that the AF motor is a bit delicate on the Canon, and the Sigma suffers with there usual quality problems.

Is there any other fast lens I should be considering ?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I own a Canon 5D as well. I got the 50mm 1.4, I havent had any issues with it however my mate had to replace his AF after his wife sat on it.

Just remember to turn the focus to infinity when not in use.

I have the Canon 1.4 /5D. I have used quite a bit in very low light and find it focusses really well. Lovely bit of kit!

My experience:
5D + Canon 50mm f/1.4 = soft up until f/2.0+, compact, quick focus
D700 + Sigma 50mm f/1.4 = ok at f/1.4, good at f/1.8, excellent from f/2.0+, big, quick focus

The Canon 35mm f/2.0 is very nice. Sharp, wide, close focusing, a little noisy with micro motor, but my preferred choice over a 50mm as a general use prime.

Thanks for the help. I want a lens for taking photos of my children in doors at christmas.

I have considered the 35mm f2 and the 85mm f1.8. I think the 35mm will be a bit short on a full frame camera. I have a 100mm f2.8 macro, which would be very close to the 85mm lens.

This leaves me wanting a 50mm lens, The 50mm f1.8 is not good focusing in low light, the 50mm f1.2 is very nice but very expensive.

The canon 50mm f1.4 is suppost to be better than the 1.8 lens, but i have never tried one. The Sigma 50mm f1.4 is suppost to be good if you get a good copy.

I'm confused

The Canon 50 f1.4 is a fantastic lens, it really does belie it's modest price tag.

I've read a few tests / reviews on these 3 and yes, you are correct the 1.2 is a stunner, but very expensive, if I remember right, the 1.4 came out much better than the 1.8 in terms of results and also feel. They voted the 1.4 as the best buy of the 3.

I know someone who's just picked up a Sigma 1.4 and is delighted with it - just to confuse you more :bonk:

I played with the 85mm f1.8 today at the Canon Day Southampton LCE (think its at the Novatec tomorrow but includes other vendors. It is a cracking lens although I tried it on my Ds MkII. Certainly on my Christmas list.

:plusone: for the 50mm F1.4. I got rid of my 50mm F1.8 as I didn't really like the length. I got the F1.4 and having played, I love it. Whatever I thought of the 50mm focal length has disappeared in a instant with the fun of the 1.4!!

The canon 50mm f1.4 wide open is still plenty sharp enough in the centre and to be honest that is where you will focus most of the time anyway as focus and recompose will result in out of focus shots.... you can always crop for composition

This shot is a 100 % crop!

Thanks very much for all of the advice, it looks like I will be getting a Canon 50mm f1.4.

I went to Warehouse Express in Norwich today to buy a Canon 50mm f1.4, had a bit of a look around and a play with a few lens.

I ended up buying a Sigma 50mm f1.4, it is a lot bigger than the canon one and it feels good on my 5d. The other thing I had not thought of was the Sigma takes 77mm filters, so all of my filters will fit.

Time will tell if I made the right decision

It felt right in your hands, there is pretty much nothing in it IQ wise and has the added benefit of cross compatibility of filters.....Makes sense to me! Enjoy

Oh and lets see some images with it!!!
