I have a Sigma 600mm F8 mirror/reflex lens circa 1988 that I would like to use on a 40D body. Has anyone experience of using these apapters, I note there are some with optics & some without. As the lens is manual focus & F8 which if any combination works best?

From what I have read the FD to EOS converters require an inner lens if you wish to go to infinity focusing, else they stop short, which is ok if you want a close focusing/macro lens. The inner lens will 1)increase the effective focal length of the lens as they then act like teleconverters 2) degrade image quality - depending on the quality of the supplementary lens and 3)add another stop (or more) of lost light through the lens.
Some come with focus confirmation chips, some dont.
Having said that my Tamron adaptall has no chip but the 50D confirms focus in the usual manner.

Might be worth giing SRB a call, they do all sorts of adapters and were able to help my father-in-law out with some for his Minolta body

I have the same Lens and I use it on my 350D using a cheap chinese adapter which I bought on E-Bay 2 years ago for £17.00 +PP.

The adapter has a mulitplication factor of 1.26, so with the crop factor of the camera (1.6) that makes any lens attached pretty well double it's original focal length and you lose one stop of light, so the Sigma 600m becomes a 1200mm @F11.

The pictures I have taken with mine have been sharp enough but with a slight loss of contrast, which I understand is common with mirror lenses.

Here in this thread is a picture of the adapter I use and a picture taken using a Sigma 70-210mm F3.5 APO lens.

Thanks John, do you have any examples taken with the Sigma 600mm on a DSLR using the adapter.
I have read about the douhnut bokeh effect being prominent in most photos taken with mirror lens.

Roxen is currently selling adapter with glass version for £21 inc. so that may be my best option.

I don't at the moment, but I will try and get some over the weekend so as to give you some idea of what to expect from that combination.

May I know do you have website for Roxen?
Thanks

Hi Willie, did not have much luck yesterday, but I did get an opportunity to get a picture of the Moon tonight.

The 350D was set to ISO400, shutter speed 1/250 and F11, the effective focal length is 1200mm, I had the camera on a stirdy tripod.

I will try some normal type shots over the next few days if work does not get in the way.

John :)

Thanks John, nice shot of the moon. Look forward to some daytime shots.

Hi Kevin, Roxen is an ebay seller I have used for parts.

Hi Kevin, Roxen is an ebay seller I have used for parts.

O right thanks.
Does he still sell adapters now?
E.g. for m4/3?

Thanks Kevin

Sorry Kevin I missed an 'S' his seller name is Roxsen, you can do an advanced search to find items by seller but if you know the kind of adapter you are after just run a full search to see what comes up using different permutations of search.

Thanks looking at it now.
Do you know what does the AF chip for?
As wanting to know if it means that I focus at the correct place.?!
And does it need any programming to the chip or not?

Thanks

Hi Kevin, I do not know much about these adapters but would check compatability with your camera body by google search or start a thread & post specific question on this forum.

Cheers

Hi willie

I did manage to grab a few pictures during the daytime here, even though the conditions have been very murky. It is difficult when you are limited to F11 and a shutter speed of a least 1/1000 with this set up unless you are on a solid tripod.

These pics are all handheld, so may not be the best, but you will notice that none of them exhibit the doughnut effect, that normally only appears when taking pictures of water or a close up with a fussy background.

All these were taken at ISO 1600 to combat the poor light, the horse and the digger were around 80 yards away and the aerial was about 30 yards.

Cheers John, I have read that it is best to use this lens on a bright sunny day and will struggle on dull days.

I have managed to find an original Canon FD to EOS converter on ebay and await delivery and have also ordered a cheap chinese one from Roxsen both of them have glass so will focus to infinity. I will eventually compare the 2 convertors to see how much of a difference the Canon is to the Chinese converter. I have just purchased an old T90 with 5 prime FD lenses (28,50,85,135,200) all 1.8 or 2.8 so will have some fun playing with them. I will wait for a nice sunny day to try out the Sigma 600mm.

You will really enjoy the T90, a superb machine, just make sure you fire off the shutter now and again to stop the magnets sticking.

Personnally I would not put any extra glass between the lens and the camera body. I had several Canon FD lenses and sold them all. However it depends if you want quality images or just record type shots. The Canon 2 x converter at a few hundred quid actually degrades the image, I am not convinced about the 1.4x either. I had the Kenko Pro 1.4x and it severley degraded the Canon L series lenses I have. You are better going for quality glass and interpolating the image bigger at a low ISO. At a high ISO you can see the grain (and noise) increase in size as well. Sometime ago I also had a teleplus 7 element 2x converter, poor, I sold it, bought a second one, just the same, sold it. By modern standards these are awful. So I don't think you will get much for £23 or so. I have nothing against Roxen, they are a good outfit. Save your money and buy quality, it will last a lifetime.

Hi AIWev, it is an adapter to fit FD lens on EOS body and not a converter to multiply zoom range, which I agree will degrade image to some extent. But I want to use FD lens on DSLR which requires adapter to enable use on more modern bodies and yes it will effect quality but you have to have the glass to focus manual lens to infinity and fit on EOS body.
