Time for another noob question.

I looked for some info on this but couldnt really get a clear answer. The compatibility list on Wiki only lists L lenses. Can extenders be used on EF lenses such as my 70-300 IS?
I understand the F value will be poor if they do :)

No!

Is that clear enough?

Maybe that's why Wiki only list certain L lenses. :bang:

Makes like Kenko and Tamron CAN be used with that lens. Canon's own cannot - at least not without an extension tube between the lens and the extender. With that set up you would lose infinity focus. :)
With a 1.4x extender you would lose 1 stop of light and with a 2x - 2 stops.

My recently purchased Canon 1.4 only fits my 70/200 F4L IS, nothing else that I have, Canon say it shouldnt be used on short focal lengths either (lt 50mm).
Very good image quality with the 70/200, mightily impressed at full zoom and wide open.

Thanks for the answers so far, I have been googling this and found some saying it worked fine on a lens then someone else saying it didnt on the same lens!

Not sure how to take that, if you are trying to be constructive, then thanks.

If you were trying to be condescending, then you achieved your goal. Either way, thanks.

There was a thread on here recently that stated the kenko extenders work perfectly with the 70-300.

The Canon one definately won't work on the 70-300, which is ironic really!

+1
It's to do with the way Canon extenders have a lip that goes inside the end of the lens, whereas 3rd party ones don't. Have a look at the Kenko and Canon 1.4x TCs on Google image search and you'll see what I mean.

I'd be a bit concerned about achieving focus at the long end of that lens as adding a stop or two to f/5.6 makes it pretty slow, but it seems like people who have tried say it works.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I thought maybe the reason the Wiki list only included the L series was because otherwise it would be a pretty long list! Obviously Canon's design intentention was for L lenses, but from what Im reading its possible they work on a few others too.
