Hi,

I'm off to Africa and looking to take some photos. I current have 550D with tamron 70 300 vc di lens for the safari. I think this focal length aint good enough but cant do much as I'm on a budget. I was looking at canon extender 2x II, will this turn my tamron range to 140 to 600? Will it be compatible with my lens? What are the disadvantages? Good review?

The canon extender won't fit,one of the Kenko ones will but you'll lose a fair bit of image quality and lose autofocus, plus you'll need plenty of light (not a problem in Africa I should imagine), I've tried a Kenko 1.4x on mine but I was disappointed with the result.

How about renting a lens for your trip instead?

You can rant a Sigma 50-500mm for about £60 for 7 days...

Is that what you do if your not happy with it? :D

You need a prime or a high end zoom to make it worth considering a teleconverter. I'd say a Sigma 50-500mm or a Canon 100-400 would both be good choices.

im off for 2 month so it works out expensive :(

Well stick with the lens you have - 300mm gives an effective (FF equivalent) reach of 480mm which is reasonable.

If you can stretch to it I would buy a good quality lens, secondhand, and sell it on your return. It would work out cheaper than renting, but you need the capital in the first place.

^^^ This. Canon 100-400L, just the job for £800ish. You wouldn't lose a bean.
