For the first time today I got an error message from my 40d , "error 01, camera, lens communication problem" that was the gist of it anyway. The shutter sound was also odd a couple of times while I snapping away, (sort of like a double shutter noise) I knew my batteries were low so I put in a spare and the error went away, carried on snapping for about 10 mins and no problems :)
So has anyone else had this error due to low batteries?
The lens was my 70-200 F4 IS (IS was on) and I did whip it off to check the contacts and they (both camera and lens) seemed clean.
I'm quite happy to write it off as due to lack of juice but wondered if anyone else had suffered same?

Hey Turbotoes,

Had a quick search for the error cos a friend of mine had this a few years back. Seem to remember he got this with a 100-400L

The general consensus is that it could be a fault on the IS mechanism of the lens.

Have you tried it on a different body?

Also - just seen that it may be worth checking canons website to make sure you have the latest firmware updates for your 40d?

I had the error 01 message other week when trying to use a Sigma 400mm APO on the 40D , Sigma told me the lens could not be rechipped to work with the Canon .

Tara,

Err 01 is a communication error between the body and the lens....frequently due to dirty contacts but could also be a fault in the lens. It may well be that the current required for the IS motors dropped the voltage too low and a comms error resulted, but the hardware would usually have this situation covered. Keep an eye on it but if your lens is approaching the end of its warranty then it may be worth gettting it checked out just in case.

Thanks Bob, it is a lens I use a lot, so I will keep an eye on it. The warranty is still good for a while, so no panic just yet. Seems promising that the fresh battery stopped the error though.
